The Bottom Line What better way to celebrate the season then with a bag of microwave popcorn, the remote control and one of these Christmas movies!

It’s the most wonderful time, of the year. So of course Hollywood has produced more than a few memorable movies to mark the holiday season. Here are my ten favorite Christmas related movies, yes a couple are a stretch to the theme, but it’s my list! In no particular order...

The New and Old Classics

A Christmas Story
“You’ll shoot your eye out!” It’s just not Christmas until I hear that line uttered. In this look back to the 1940s young Ralphie wants a BB Gun for Christmas. Will Santa bring it? Will Ralphie shoot his eye out? Just wait until TNT runs 24 hours of “A Christmas Story” to find out!

Miracle on 34th Street
With several versions available it shouldn’t be hard to find one that convinces you Santa does exist. As far as I am concerned the original 1947 non-colorized version is the best, although the 1994 update is a very close second. Whether it is Natalie Wood or Mara Wilson playing Susan this story is a true holiday classic showing us that Christmas is the season to believe.

The Santa Clause
Tim Allen plays a toy executive who startles a man climbing into his house on Christmas Eve. While looking for the man’s identification after he falls from his roof all he finds is a business card, that turns out to be the Santa Clause. As the movie unfolds we watch Tim Allen transform into Santa Claus.

Home Alone
A young boy, Kevin, is left behind when his family goes on vacation for Christmas. Kevin is forced to defend his house from burglars who are casing all of the homes in the neighborhood. There is a lot of slap stick humor as the young boy manages to thwart the would be thieves.

It’s A Wonderful Life
No movie says Christmas like the Jimmy Stewart classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life.” I never saw this movie until I was an adult because ZuZu’s line “every time a bell rings an angel gets its wings” scared me as a kid. She sounded like some sort of possessed demon to me. I still cringe when I hear that line but it doesn’t take away from my enjoyment of this movie.

Have you ever wondered what life would be like if you didn’t exist? George Bailey, played by Stewart, gets the chance to find out when an angel saves him after he jumps from a bridge in a suicide attempt. George’s guardian angel gives him a glimpse of the world if he had never been born.

Animated Favorites

Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol
No Christmas movie list could be complete without some version of Dickens’ classic, A Christmas Carol. My personal favorite has always been the cartoon version staring the nearly blind Mr. Magoo. Finally released to video in 2004 I no longer have to scan television listings to find this cute and kid friendly version of what can be an intense story for young viewers. The music is great and will have you singing about “Razzelberry dressing.”

The Grinch Who Stole Christmas
I’d be lying if I said “The Grinch” is my favorite Christmas special. I personally find the story a bit ho-hum. So why is it on my Top 10 list? Max. The Grinch’s little dog who is forced to have antlers tied to his ears and pull the sleigh. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a cuter animated dog in my life. I watch it every year just to see Max.

The Year without a Santa Claus
My all time favorite Christmas special. It’s got the Heat Miser singing his song and Mother Nature. It doesn’t get any better than that. Add to that a cute storyline about Santa needing a year off and you have a winning Christmas claymation special.

A Stretch on the Christmas Theme

An Affair To Remember
This one is a bit of a stretch, but the final seen does take place on Christmas day. It also happens to be one of my favorite movies. Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr star in this romantic drama. The two meet on a cruise ship and fall in love despite plans to wed others once they return home. They decide to meet 6 months later at the top of the Empire State Building, but an accident keeps Kerr from keeping the appointment. On Christmas Day the two are finally reunited.

Bright Eyes
Yes, I am a Shirley Temple fan, and Bright Eyes is among my favorites. In this 1934 movie, Shirley Temple’s character is left orphaned on Christmas morning . Certainly not a merry Christmas for the young girl, but she does get to sing the immortal “On the Good Ship Lollipop” before becoming the center of a custody battle. Not exactly a traditional Christmas movie, but it’s there!
