Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson star in this boring, predictable movie; Bride Wars directed by Gary Winick is a snooze fest.
Honestly I didn't expect much and my lowered expectations were right on target.
SPOILER ALERT!!!! Details below.
Hathaway as Emma and Hudson as Liv never really have that "friend chemistry" that is needed for the parts. Hathaway is a wishy washy teacher who doesn't earn a lot of money and has trouble standing up for herself (isn't that the same character she usually plays?) Hudson plays Liv the pushy brash lawyer with money.
Both have been planning their weddings as June brides at the Plaza Hotel since they were young girls. They would play bride and groom with Hudson always as the bride, of course; even compiling a "Bride Book" with the future wedding hopes and dreams.
Now all they both need is an engagement ring and fiances to achieve their dreams of marrying at the Plaza. Liv accidentally stumbles on the ring her boyfriend plans to give her and aggressively forces him to propose to her.
Sweet Emma on the other hand is surprised by a propsal first which really bugs Liv. They both go to Emma's appointment with Marion St Claire - Wedding Planner Extraordinaire (Candice Bergen). Because of a mixup by St. Claire's assistant both women end up with the same wedding date at the Plaza.
That's when the "War" begins. Most of the really funny parts have already been shown in trailers, so there are really no surprises and not a whole lot of fun.
The funniest part of the movie - which I had seen in a trailer is at the Bridal Shower when Hudson says "your Wedding better watch it" and "your Wedding better sleep with one eye open" The delivery was pretty darn funny.
The bits where they sabotage each other were hokey and far fetched. Hudson changes the color at the tanning booth on Hathaway who ends up day glo orange. Hathaway changes the color in Hudson's hair dye and she ends up with blue hair. Dumb. (...and again, saw it in the trailers)
Emma's boyfriend seems to get more agressive and jerky as the movie rolls and although you like him in the beginning by the end you are hoping she doesn't go through with the wedding.
There weren't any characters in this movie that I really enjoyed. Nobody stood out as being particularly good. The movie was bland and boring. Oh, but the Vera Wang bridal gown was nice! I would have enjoyed seeing more gowns.
I also enjoyed the method they used for some parts of filming the movie where they showed stills that almost seemed like they could be from a wedding album.
BIG FINALE - SURPRISE!!! They're both having a baby - with the same DUE DATE. Who would have guessed?
The film was light and fluffy, if you really want to see it, rent it for $3.99. Don't pay to see it at the movie theater.
