| JEA115's Full Review: Hewlett Packard HP PhotoSmart Ink-jet Printer |
I received a digital camera for Christmas in 2000 and loved taking pictures with it, but felt like I wasn't getting good quality prints with my "regular" printer. I sometimes took pictures with my digital camera to email to friends and family and took a second set with my regular camera so I would have a quality photo to save. Then I spoke with a local photographer who used the PhotoSmart P1000 for his personal use with his digital camera. He popped my SmartMedia card into his printer and Presto! I had quality pictures from my card. I was sold!
There are many great features on this printer. First, you don't even have to hook it up to your PC to print out pictures, you can print directly from a memory card. This means if you are really anxious you could actually take your digital camera and this printer to a function and print pictures moments after you take them! You can also use an Infrared option to print pictures from your camera to the printer, if your camera has this option.
As for features, you can choose the pictures you want to print, how many copies, and what size with the press of a few buttons directly on the printer. You can print one-sided or two-sided. You can use plain paper or photo paper (photo paper prints a professional quality picture). There is also the option to print your pages in "space saving" mode, which puts more pictures on a page, or in "photo album" mode, which prints pictures so that they could be placed directly in an album. I've never had a problem loading the paper or having it jam.
To hook the printer to your PC you must have a bidirectional IEEE 1284-compliant parallel cable, or a USB cable. Though this is not included with the printer, I was able to simply unplug the cable from the back of my laser printer and interchange it with the PhotoSmart P1000. Once you have hooked the printer to your computer, you can use the included software to adjust or scale your image and very easily create album pages.
This printer also allows you to save images to your computer without having to download them from your digital camera (my camera is an Olympus and it used the battery to download).
