Sex and Death 101 : 70 sexual encounters in one film???
Written: Feb 02 '09 (Updated Feb 02 '09)
Pros:I enjoyed the way the whole concept of "fate" was examined.
Cons:This movie is definitely not for everyone.
The Bottom Line: Sex, sex, and more sex. That pretty much describes this movie. But with such a unique premise, it's not your average movie about sex, sex, and more sex.
Sex and Death 101 is a strange movie, with a premise that's definitely different. I enjoyed it, but found myself wondering what the writers were on, when they developed this script.
Simon Baker plays Roderick, an engaged man, looking forward to wedded bliss. But then a mysterious email arrives, a list of 101 names. He recognizes the first 30 or so names as those of all the women he's ever had sex with. But he's surprised to see 70 additional names on the list. Surely this can't be a list of people he's going to have sex with, can it?
But the bachelor party sort of proves the point as the stripper's name is next on the list. And sure enough, despite intentions to the contrary, Roderick gives in to his desires.
From this point, the list sort of drives Roderick's life. He constantly meets people whose names appear on the list, and a sexual encounter ensues. He calls off his wedding, and just enjoys the way fate seems to be dropping these women from the sky right into his lap.
Then there's Winona Ryder's story. She plays a sort of femme fatale - men that have sex with her fall into a deep coma afterwards. For most of the movie, we learn very little about her, or the men she's "choosing". Of course, you know the two stories will eventually collide. But how - that's the mystery.
I loved exploring Roderick's dilemma. Because fate is a very strange concept. Knowing instantly whether the woman you just met will ever be in your bed can be a heavy burden. Especially when Roderick meets a woman he really likes, but her name is not on the list. Imagine meeting the person you think could be "the one", but knowing your future is not to be.
This movie is full of drama, but it's also a comedy. One particularly funny scene involves two women who happen to have the same name. There's another funny bit, where Simon decides he's going to stay celibate for a while. But fate intervenes, and many names get crossed off the list at once.
Simon Baker was a terrific choice for this role. He never comes off as "silly". Instead he brings a quiet charm to this role, rather than slapstick. As both narrator and main character, he carries nearly the entire movie by himself. Although Winona Ryder also does a good job in her role.
This movie is definitely not predictable. I had no idea where it was heading. And, the ending was very satisfying.
But with its overriding concept of sex, sex, and more sex, it's not for everyone. Remember - 70 names are crossed off during a 100 minute film. And the language pretty much goes along with the concept. So the movie is rated R, with good reason.
I enjoyed this movie, but I think it will appeal to a limited audience. Use your judgment whether this movie is right for you.
