Thanks for the review, I was 13 when President Kennedy was killed. You brought back some good and bad memories. I'll cherish the Beatles. I got to see them in 1965 in Chicago. Thanks Stella

Every review you write is so special, bro! Thanks for sharing your life experience along with great music, too. :o)
I thought I knew my Beatles, but there are a few songs here I either haven't tried or have forgotten! I think I'll have to go raid my brother's music shelves for some Beatles recordings and fix that in a hurry!
Hope things are going well your way!
Cheerio,

...I couldn't resist reading this one and commenting. How can one find 20 songs to pick from among the hundreds of wonders these guys penned?
I guess I'd try and squeeze "Strawberry Fields" in there if I could. Like everyone else, I have so much personal nostalgia and history tied in to their songs that it's difficult to judge them on their objective merits. "Here Comes The Sun" and "Blue Jay Way" are such counterpoints and superb works that play to my moods. "Norwegian Wood" titillates if you let it. "Let It Be" is a timeless piece that was played at the funeral of the teenage son of friends of mine that brought everybody in the place to their knees from emotion. "Lady Madonna" and "Hey, Jude." And on and on.
So many songs, so many songs. Amazing. The best rock band ever, period. They redefined the genre.Sigh. Thanks, Don, I needed this.

LOL! Thanks for the great comments, Mike. I'm betting you could write a great "20 Fave Fab Four Songs Write-Off" Entry, too (I'm thinking that late entries would be cool with this Write-Off's sponsor Alex).

Really heartfelt intro into those times, Don (yours and theirs).
Great selection too- it's always a tough one with them because there's just so damned many!
Beatles 65/Help/Revolver and Let it Be remain the constants for me- Let it Be being the most significant from the standpoint that, although they were falling apart, the album remains littered with some of the strongest, purest and most direct playing, composing and group contributions from each on the other's songs.
ie: Paul's bass work on I Me Mine and his piano on For You Blue (Georges stuff)
Ringo's tom work and George's lead on Let it Be
(Paul's had some good to great players- and even some icons play this song- no one has ever touched what those two committed on the original recording of this: pure, simple, direct and powerful)
John's scatting riffs and leadwork on Paul's Get back and Paul's bass work on John's Don't Let Me Down.
Good stuff.

Singing here... (Reply to this comment)
by MamaMiaEtc
and thinking how amazing that I can sing every song on your list without a moment's hesitation, and I bet there are millions out there just like me, that's how powerful the Beatles' legacy is. My kids (ages 15 and 21) also were weaned on the Beatles, and have grown up to love music from Art Brut to Miles Davis. Thanks for your essay, it was great reading.

I loved Karen Carpenter, too --- she had one of best voices I've ever heard, and I miss her.

hard to choose a favorite from the Beatles. I had the Rubber Sole Album and a babysitter stole it from me. : (
I liked Ticket to Ride and I was thrilled when Karen Carpenter recorded it and put her own stamp on it. I'm a fan of her too.
I also like Got To Get You Into My Life and If I Fell or I'm Looking Through You (these are probably all from Rubber Sole ; )
That's a sweet story about your dad that you two saluted each other. Somebody blew up the photo of John-John when he was saluting his dad's casket and pasted it on a transformer box by a school near me. I pass it whenever I drive to the highway. It's a bit faded from the weather, making it appear a little ghostly.
Ringo did a PBS special not that long ago with George Harrison's son and Eric Clapton I think. I can't remember who else. Ringo is so likeable.
I enjoyed your review.

Susie,
You know, one of my favorite rock memories is from 1973 and watching NBC-TV's broadcast of "Elvis: Live From Hawaii" --- I was blown away by his stage presence and by his performance. If ever a guy commanded the world stage, he sure did.
Thanks for the comments.

Can you believe. (Reply to this comment)

I was born in England and loved Elvis. The Beatles didn't exist for me while he was around. I was so upset that he didn't come to England.
As I grew older I did buy Beatles 45's and 33's and appreciated the music they wrote.
18 years ago when we came to America to live, I gave away all my records except for the Elvis ones. I didn't find out until after I was here awhile that they were worth a lot of money.
You win some you lose some.
Great review.
Susie.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for those comments. "Norwegian Wood" is one of my all-time favorites, a list which in the case of Beatles' music changes a lot --- it's a beautiful song.

This was not only a trip down an autobiographical memory lane (and not boring in the least), that's an excellent list of songs. I would have added "Norwegian Wood" being the jazz nut that I am. It's been covered by numerous jazz folks (as have many of the songs you listed). Great music is great music no matter the genre employed. Thanks.

Actually got some internet access and was able to get here to epinions. Thanks for your comments on my last posting. And I really enjoyed this one, especially the references to your Dad's service.
Hope you and yours had a great Thanksgiving. I got a few hours off and actually had a great dinner (in a chow hall, can you believe it?).
Have a safe and Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year!
Cheers,
Paul
