| mtbat's Full Review: Twilight |
I ended up seeing Twilight because there just were not a lot of choices at the theater the weekend I saw the movie. Out of 15 screens, 4 were showing Bolt(I want to see this, but with my kids) 4 were showing Quantum of Solace(not seeing this unless someone is holding a gun to my head and making me) One theater was showing Changeling-I couldn’t remember what this was about, Two were showing Madagascar(seen it loved it but not enough to see a second time by myself) one was showing High School Musical 3(again, not unless someone holds a gun to my head and makes me) and two were showing Twilight. I’m not sure if that adds up to 15, but the end result was-the only movie I hadn’t seen, that I thought might be worth something-was Twilight.
Going in I knew next to nothing about the movie, only that it was based on a book-that I hadn’t read yet, that it was about teenaged vampires…. And that was about it. So what the heck, I gave it a shot and while it wasn’t the best movie I’ve ever seen-I did like it. Enough so that afterwards I bought the book Twilight by Stephanie Myers. I’m enjoying the book, and finding that it doesn’t differ greatly from the movie-in some ways yes, but so far nothing major. But who knows? I haven’t finished the book yet.
The movie is about a girl name Isabella Swan who moves to a small, and dreary and wet town called Forks in Washington, from Phoenix in Arizona because her mom decides to go on the road with Bella’s stepfather-a minor league baseball player. Bella’s father Charlie Is the local police chief in Forks. Bella’s new home town is so dank and dreary and overcast even the theater felt cold (wait, no that was because the idiots running the theater didn’t have the heat turned on). Bella isn’t exactly happy to be moving to Forks. She’d rather stay in sunny Phoenix.
Her father tries to make her feel at home, he buys her a used(and very beat up) truck from an old friend-who’s son later helps Bella figure out part of the mystery that comes to surround her.
On Bella’s first day at her new high school, she makes some new friends-just some average normal teens. Then at lunch, she notices a group of strangely pale teenagers who keep to themselves. Her new best buddies tell her that those are the Cullens. Dr. Cullen’s foster kids to be exact. There are five of them-3 boys and two girls. They’re paid off in couples, except for one boy-Edward Cullen. Bella finds herself strangely attracted to Edward. When she finds herself in science class sitting next to him, Edward won’t even talk to her-in fact she seems to make him physically ill.
This is a story of love, but not quite Romeo and Julie. Bella is a normal girl-Edward is anything but a normal boy. In fact he’s not really even a boy at all. When Bella asks him “how old are you?” he responds 17. When she asks him “how long have you been 17?” his response-“a very long time”.
The movie is narrated by Bella, it flows-softly. There is some conflict, Edward must save Bella several times over-both from himself-and from others. Edward-if you haven’t guessed is a vampire-but nothing like any vampire I’ve ever read about. To start with his “family” are “vegetarian” vampires-they only drink from animals. Edward’s “talent” is reading people’s minds, and part of his fascination with Bella is that he can’t read hers(sort of like the opposite of Charlaine Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse character-where her telepathic barmaid can read everyone’s minds-except vampires, this vampire can read everyone’s mind-except the mind of the girl he now falls in love with.) During one scene in a restaurant Edward tells Bella that reading people’s minds isn’t so hard, they seem to think mostly about sex and money (and occasionally cats).
The special effects were minimal and not so much impressive, nor unimpressive. The story itself doesn’t require many effects- a bit of running, sparkles…. It’s about a girl, and a boy and how they fall in love. The obstacles they have to overcome -his family accepts her-for the most part, hers doesn’t know what he is. It’s not obscenely gory or overly sexual. It’s not light hearted, but neither is it bleak and depressive.
I can see why the movie and the books appeal to teenagers and women. I would recommend the movie-if you like slightly dramatic love stories tinged with the supernatural-if you are looking for a blood and gore“vampire” movie-this movie probably isn’t what you are looking for.
Cast, director etc… I don’t go see movies because of who is staring in them or because of who directs them. I see movies that appeal to me-for whatever reason. There weren’t a lot of “recognizable” faces-no one so famous I’d know exactly who they were. And that’s fine by me. I’m lucky if I can remember the main characters names. If I like a movie, I like it because of what it was about, not because so and so played such and such a part.
Recommended: yes well maybe, depending on what you’re looking for. Fairly low key, not too gory okay for younger audience . I started, and all but finished this review the weekend the movie came out in the theaters… but life is often busy and I just now got around to finishing it. Hopefully this will be out soon on DVD (I love Redbox) because both my kids want to see this. And I still haven’t finished the book.
