Bona
Bona is a Swedish company tracing its roots back to Wilhelm Edner in 1894. They have grown over the ensuing years and have developed into an international company specializing in floor care products, including a total system for hardwood floor finishing and care. A visit to bonakemi dot com will introduce the visitor to the whole line of floor care products, floor care advice, and even some informative floor care movies. Bona markets and makes hardwood cleaner, refinisher, and polish as well as microfiber dusters, mops, and cleaning pads. Applicator pads and self-adhesive felt pads are also among the many Bona products available online or in stores. Our local Sears just started selling many of the Bona floor care products. One of the products that may be purchased from the Bona site or local Bona dealers is their Swedish formula stone, tile & laminate cleaner.
Bona’s Stone, Tile, and Laminate Floor Cleaner
Bona’s STLFC (stone, tile, and laminate floor cleaner) is available in multiple sizes: 22 ounce, 32 ounce, 36 ounce, and the monster 160 ounce size for those with lots of flooring to clean. The STLFC, like other Bona products, is Greenguard certified – a nontoxic cleaner safe on you, your pets and family, and the environment. The Material Safety Data Sheet, easily accessed from the Bona site, shows that STLFC is about as benign as a cleaning product can be, with no health warnings and no toxicity evident. If you drink STLFC, it may cause gastrointestinal discomfort. In such circumstances drink one or two glasses of water to dilute the swallowed Bona. The only other caution on the MSDS was this: “HYGIENIC PRACTICES: Wash hands with soap and water before eating or using rest rooms.”
How to Use:
Vacuum, sweep or dust mop. I vacuum, of course, and follow the vacuuming with swipes using a dry Swiffer.
Mist. To do this just spray the included trigger on the spray bottle. You’ll hit the target every time even though you “mist.”
Clean – Rinse cleaning pad often to avoid streaking.
Results
I’d read on the Bona site that STLFC could be used on Pergo and bought it because of that possibility. I vacuumed and dusted the kitchen floor as I normally do before cleaning and then applied the STLFC using a microfiber cloth. Instead of using the Bona mop, I prefer to get down on the floor and do my cleaning up close and personal so I can see the results close up. The STLFC cleans well judging by the dirt and residue on my microfiber cloth. However, I was disappointed by the lack of sheen left behind afterwards.
To compare results with a cleaning product made specifically for Pergo I cleaned two sections of floor with both products for a side-by-side comparison. Both sides looked clean and streak free, but neither had any hint of a sheen. This dullness may be due to the age of the Pergo floor (five years), the toenail scratches left by the dogs, on just the inherent nature of Pergo. I’ve ordered Bona’s STL refresher and hope to review it after testing. It promises to leave behind a shine after use.
Some Success – I also tried the STLFC one two bathroom floors, one with ceramic tile, and one with vinyl tile. Both floors looked fabulous after cleaning with STLFC. I was so impressed with the sparkling look that I asked Mrs. Spudman if I could clean the floor in her bathroom. She generously agreed to let me have a go at it and was equally impressed by the results of STLFC. I even tried this marvelous cleaner on the porcelain toilet tank that glistened like a mirror afterwards.
Finally – Bona’s STLFC is a very good product that performs well and is kind to the environment. It’s a little more expensive than some other cleaners, but well worth it.
Thanks, Dawn!
