The Bottom Line This is a non-partisan write off that seeks to discuss good charities, why they are important to you, and what you want us to learn from them.

As you may or may not know, I attempted to host a write off dealing with your favorite charity. With the holidays upon us, I feel as though it is the perfect time to share with others why we support (either financially or emotionally) a non-profit organization whose goal it is to better the lives of others. The holidays for me are a special time of reflection upon all it is that I am so blessed to have and how fortunate I am to live the life I do. Too often with the hustle and bustle of modernism, we forget to reflect on the benefits of our lives.

This write off focuses on a charitable organization that you deem to be your favorite charity. It is a time to reflect on an organization that is meaningful for you and whose mission is something that you support for one reason or another. But it is also a time to share with others information on charities that maybe we have never heard of. Your favorite charity does not need to be a major, national charity; rather, it can be the local soup kitchen you volunteer at.

If you are interested in joining this write off, either shoot me an email or post a comment. Typical format can be as followed.

What is the name of your favorite charity?

Alzheimer’s Association of Massachusetts

Does your favorite charity have a website?

www.alzmass.org

What is the mission of your charity? (If it can be found)

To eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research to provide and enhance care and support for all affected, and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

Why is this organization important to you? What drives you to help?

No matter where you are, no matter what your race or ethnicity, no matter your social status, your level of education, your net worth, your profession, or your status in life, the chances of you knowing someone with Alzheimer's disease is very good.

As a junior in high school, at the time of my grandfather's passing away, it soon became readily apparent that my grandmother, Helen, was having the disease take its ugly grip upon her.

Now, several years later, Gram is suffering from one of the most devastating diseases known: Alzheimer's. It is a disease that does not simply affect the person it takes a hold of, but rather, all of the family and friends of the person with the disease.

Though memories might fade with Alzheimer's, love simply will not.

One of my main goals in life is to ensure that no other family will ever have to deal with the toll that Alzheimer's brings on. Finding a cure is not simply important, it is imperative. Not just to me, but to a nation, a world, humanity.

What are some of the events that you have taken part in that support this charity?

I have partaken in Memory Ride 2005, a 150 mile bike ride from Brattleboro, Vermont to Boston, Massachusetts over the course of 2 days. This was one of the most amazing experiences of my life and I hope to do it again in the future. I have also taken part in Memory Walks, which are an afternoon charity fundraising walk. Some I have done have been in Worcester, Westfield, and Plymouth. I have also taken part in a road race on Mother’s Day with proceeds of the road race going to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Do you think there is more that you can do for this charity? What are your ideas?

I always feel as though there is more that I can do, and want to do! Anything that I can do to help cure this disease, I would be happy to help out with. I would love to be able to organize a road race to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.

What can your friends at Epinions.com do to help out your favorite charity?

I would simply love for my fellow Epinions writers to log onto www.alzmass.org or www.alz.org. There is a lot of information to take in to help learn more about the disease and what you can do to help out the organization. There are sections about advocacy on both sites stating how important it is to contact your legislators about supporting research and funding for the disease. Lastly, if there is ever an event that supports the Alzheimer's Association chapter in your state that you can support either with your time or money, please consider doing so.
