Indeed. And now I'm seeing Woody's name in the press a lot because his beloved master has died. R.I.P. Ingmar Bergman.

Also, I was focusing on the onscreen work of Woody Allen. "The Purple Rose Of Cairo" would definitely displace "What's Up Tiger Lily?" if I had focused on all of his efforts as an actor and as a director. "Interiors" might as well. I don't think there's any doubt that he has made quite a few good movies. Both of our lists show that.

Maybe it's just my Woody guilty pleasure. It was one of the first Allen films I saw, and it still leaves a humorous impression on me.

I guess I still have a hard time seeing how Tiger Lily belongs at all, considering Allen made so many (IMHO) better films subsequently, e.g. Purple Rose of Cairo, Love and Death, Bullets Over Broadway, Sleeper, Stardust Memories, Manhattan, to name a few.

But no point quibbling... tastes differ!

Thanks John. The order is chronological. If this were in order of preference, I would have put "Annie Hall" at the top. Other five-star efforts on this list are "The Front," "Manhattan," "Hannah And Her Sisters," "Crimes And Misdemeanors," and "Deconstructing Harry." "What's Up Tiger Lily?" would definitely be at #10. I'm glad you enjoyed my list, though.

Is this list in any order, i.e., is your #1 truly your favorite Allen film? If so, that would be quite extraordinary-- you'd probably be in a company of one, there, which is not to say What's Up Tiger Lily? is terrible, but more that he has made so many far, far better films!

All in all, some fine picks-

Thank you Mike. I still look forward to his upcoming works, but I think I'm in the minority. In fact, I have to make time quickly these days, or I will have to wait for the home video release.

I dropped off on him somewhere (and at some point)- but he has made some wonderful moments (from time to time), and you refocused some of them with a really good overview.

Thanks, brother

Nice list, but out of order (Reply to this comment)

Woody Allen is our finest living American filmmaker. No one has made so many great movies as he has. My top ten is as follows:

1. Annie Hall (my all time favorite movie)
2. Manhattan (great followup)
3. Love and Death (laugh out loud funny)
4. Sleeper (see number 3)
5. Bullets over Broadway (simply brilliant)
6, Hannah and Her Sisters (amazing)
7. Mighty Aphrodite (also amazing)
8. A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy (overlooked)
9. Purple Rose of Cairo (I would have changed the ending)
10. Crimes and Misdemeanors (Martin Landau's finest hour)

There are so many other great ones, that it's hard to stick to 10, just like you said. Thanks for writing this!

Thanks. The Front is one of his first truly great films. He worked very well with a cast and crew who lived through the blacklist firsthand. I am looking forward to Match Point, especially given the strong recommendation from Roger Ebert.

Thanks. Those are all fine films. One of the few I haven't seen yet is Wild Man Blues, a documentary that follows him as he goes on a jazz tour. I got hooked on Allen's work with the more comedic efforts, and have watched him grow as a filmmaker. Now I look forward to every new release of his.

I love Woody Allen, too! I think I've seen most of his films, although I never did see that jazz one.

Here's my list (man, this is very hard to compile):

1. Annie Hall
2. Hannah and Her Sisters
3. Sleeper
4. Manhattan
5. Love and Death
6. The Purple Rose of Cairo
7. Play it Again Sam
8. Zelig
9. Crimes & Misdemeanors
10. Bananas

I'm really looking forward to Matchpoint. Roger Ebert said it is among Allen's Top 5.

See ya,

I'll bet whittling it down to 10 took a long time. I liked that you included The Front, one of Allen's underrated performances.

Don't know if I could do it--would feel like I was leaving something out. That said, I gotta put in a word for his directorial debut Take the Money and Run and his reunion with both Keaton and writer Marshall Brickman on Manhattan Murder Mystery.

Thanks Vittorio. Allen's involvement itself makes me want to make time for his work. I just saw the trailer for Match Point, and hope I get the chance to see it before it leaves theaters.

A lot of Allen fans will argue that most of Allen's films from the late seventies and the late eighties are among his very best, Horse. It would be hard to disagree. Annie Hall is definitely an all-time favorite of mine.

I totally agree: 4-7 are my all-time Allen's favorites and I watch them again and again. For a brilliant director, Allen has made his share of duds though, probably more so than any of my other favorite directors.

All the films you've mentioned are fine ones, Steven. Other Allen films that could be in the second ten are Sleeper, The Purple Rose Of Cairo, and Interiors. There are very few clunkers in his film career, but I still want to see Picking Up The Pieces some time.

Yes, Jan, Bullets Over Broadway is a Woody Allen film, with John Cusack playing a role Woody might have played himself were he a younger man. Allen is a fine and funny storyteller, and his body of work speaks to that.

Yes, Bullets Over Broadway was done by him. I like some of his stuff. The ones I've seen that I enjoyed are Crimes & Misdemeanors the Oedipus Wrecks short from New York Stories, Radio Days, Husbands & Wives, Love & Death, Stardust Memories, Mighty Aphrodite (which I just saw and liked), Deconstructing Harry, and Sweet & Lowdown.

I'm definitely anticipating Match Point which I heard is one of his best. I hope it's his best since Husbands & Wives.

I haven't too many Allen films and keep meaning to, so this is really helpful. Zelig is hilarious and I also enjoyed Annie Hall. Is Bullets Over Broadway by him?
