The Bottom Line If there isn't a gift for everyone on your list here, I cannot help you
Box Sets of DVDs make awesome Christmas gifts (or Hannakah, Kwanza, Birthdays, Tuesdays, whatever). Here are Ten awesome gift ideas for almost everyone on your gift list! for The Science Scholar Blue Planet -Seas of Life Collectors Set This outstanding documentary is all about ocean life. It is a fantastically well done documentary by the BBC and it is narrated by David Attenborough. I bought this for my son a couple years ago, and he absolutely loved it. So did I. The picture quality is top notch and the information contained in this eight episode series on 4 DVDs is all very interesting. for the cartoon crazy guy or gal Boxes One thru Four of FUTURAMA This was in my opinion, Matt Groenings best series, surpassing even the Simpsons. Alas the shows cancellation at the end of season four may prove I am not universally agreed with in this opinion. Join the adventures of Fry, frozen in the year 1999 and thawed out a 1000 years later, with his new friends great great great nephew Professor Farnsworth, best friend robot Bender, love interest Leela, and Amy Wong, Hermes, and of course Dr. Zoidberg. This is for 13 and older though. These four boxes each contain 4 discs, (except the first which contains 3) and have the entire 87 episode collection. Each box is uniquely packaged, and most of the discs have fun extras. for the Sci Fi Fan Alien Quadrilogy Oh you know they already went out and bought themselves the Star Wars box set, so get them this 8 disc set featuring all four movies in their original theatrical releases, extended edition releases and tons of extra features. Ripley and her Alien friends look great on this awesome box set. The extended editions also add a good deal to the stories. Yup, you bet I own it. for the War History Buff Band of Brothers This 6 Disc 10 hour special originally aired on HBO to rave reviews, and I can see why. One weekend when I was sick, I watched all 10 in a row courtesy of Netflix. Its an outstanding view of WWII from boot camp to the Eagles Nest, based on the book by Stephen Ambroses real life stories of Easy Company. I bought this for my dad a couple Christmas's ago, and he loved it. I found a used copy for myself a year later. for the Western fan The Man with No Name Trilogy Sergio Leone's classic trilogy that made Clint Eastwood a star. Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. I loved these films as a kid, and to have the whole set in one box is great. What, your Clint Eastwood fan already has it? Then get the Westerner 3 Pack with Clint Eastwood in The Unforgiven, The Outlaw Josie Wales and Pale Rider I own both sets (plus his Dirty Harry 5 DVD set) and the widescreen transfers look great. Not many extras, just good movies. for the Film Geek Stanley Kubrick Collection No film geek would be disapointed with a box set of the master director Stan the man Kubrick! Here in one box is Lolita, 2001:A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, Dr. Strangelove, Barry Lydon, The Shining, and Full Metal Jacket! It also has a bonus disc with a documentary about Stanley Kubrick. It also has Eyes Wide Shut, but lets not let that ruin it okay? If your favorite film geek has the Kubrick Collection, get him the Akira Kurosawa 4 Samurai Classics Set with Seven Samuri, The Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo and Sanjuro. Since I have the Kubrick collection and not the Kurosawa set, you may email me for my address to mail my gift. Thank you!!! Classic Film Geek What, your film fan hates all those new movies! The ones made from the 1960s on? Well get them- The Complete Thin Man Collection I love old films, and back years before I was born, Hollywoods favorite film couple was William Powell and Myrna Loy (and of course their dog Asta) Although not married in real life, their portrayal of private detective Nick Charles and his high society wife Nora Charles delighted audiences in the 30s and the 40s, and I can attest can make you smile even today. This affordable box contains, The Thin Man, After the Thin Man, Another Thin Man, Shadow of the Thin Man, The Thin Man Goes Home and Song of the Thin Man. Nora, is your husband working on the case? Nora Yes, a case of scotch, why don't you join him. for the music fan Live Aid Box Set can't be beat with four DVD's covering more than half of the 1980s Live Aid concert. About 10 hours of music including Sting, U-2, the Rolling Stones, Phil Collins, Queen, Elton John, The Who and David Bowie. What, your music fan is too serious for such 80s fluff? Alright, get them the 7 disc set Martin Scorcese Presents The Blues - A musical Journey. Again, if you need my address, just email me! I have the Live Aid set, and I think its great, its fun to watch. My brother and I watched as much as we could on TV live when it actually happened. I've rented a couple of discs from Scorseses the Blues, and its very informative and has a lot of historical blues footage!. for the Action Fan Die Hard Box Set Yup, I admit it, I'm a Bruce Willis fan, and I'm not ashamed of it. As an action star, he has far more depth than Segal or any of those morons. He is fun to watch. The Die Hard movies were a blast, and this six disc set has each movie with DTS soundtrack and extra features. Any action fan should love it! If he or she has that, Roberto Rodriguezes Mariachi box set is another good choice, containing both Mariachi and Desparado. AND ONE BOX SET SHALL RULE THEM ALL Lord of the Rings Box Set Extended Edition. Hands down this is THE Box Set to own. The entire trilogy of Lord of the Rings is presented in 12, count em one dozen discs! Even the cases look awesome, each one looks like a leatherbound book, and all three fit into a nice box. Each movie is on two discs with lots of extended and additional scenes which add to the movie and give it greater depth and meaning. The DTS EX soundtrack absolutely rocks, I use it routinely to show off my audio system. The color is spot on. There are enough extras here for ANY movie buff, commentaries, interviews, making ofs, whatever you can think of, its there. |
