What Are We, Chopped Liver?
by Barefooter | Dec 12 '05
I feel like breaking into song: "R-E-S-P-E-C-T." But wait, I can't sing. Gotta go call Aretha.

There are no pills for stupidity (Reply to this comment)

I am sorry to hear you have such bad experience. I am a hearie but I have been in a very lovable relationship with a deaf girl for a year now, and it is experience like this makes my blood boils. I also happen to be Asian, and let me apologize for that brainless waitress. Please look at it in another way, she cannot be that smart if she is a waitress, right (discrimination can go both directions)? So brush off this incident and move on. Next time this happens, take a hard stance to ensure no one gets away with it. If it means, at the end of the evening; someone lost her job. So be it. That's what I would have done if it happens to me. In this day and age, such discrimination should never be tolerated.

Hi
read your review of Domo77. Not a bit surprised. That's very common there. And not just to Deaf people. I'm hearing and have some familiarity w/ sushi/teppan dining as well as other contacts w/ Japanese culture. I have it on good authority that it's common practice everywhere to "hustle" us stupid Americans - or at least the ones less willing to pour cash into tip jars.

Exagerating the difficulties in communications is the norm. Rushing people through meals is also. Don't feel too bad about your experience. Looks like you handled it well and have the right idea. Glad to see what you did here and what you wrote. Small comfort when people are jerks that those same people are equal opportunity jerks. Ironic that they know they're jerks and try to drop their jerk skills to new lows.

I'm sorry you and your friends were so badly treated. My daughter has a degree in Deaf Education and so I've learned a little bit more about the deaf. I hope you do write a letter and that it does some good.

I have to agree with KWilson here. There is something wrong with this picture. The waitress works for tips. It doesn't make sense. I'm thinking the boss told her to tell all of you to move to the bar. They wanted their precious table to rake in some more big bucks. It seems to me that they took advantage of you, they know you like the place and probably recognize you.

I wish you didn't leave ANY tip. I don't think a letter is strong enough. Is there an organization that represents deaf people that can help you?

Why don't you and your friends picket the place? Make some signs and parade in front of the building. Call the news station and tell them (or have someone tell them what you're going to do).

If you don't want to do that, make a copy of all the comments here and send it to them with your letter.

A free desert in no way makes up for the insult. You paid $200 and you were supposed to get good food and good service. A PLEASANT dining experience. For $200, you should have had a VERY pleasant dining experience. If it makes you feel any better, read this review: http://www.epinions.com/content_216540679812

My father-in-law lost his hearing due to complications from a drug used to save his life. How lucky you are to have such wonderful friends.

I usually am the one who speaks up to people like that, I have no shame! :) I get into this "zone" where my language turns into a living thesaurus and I get this tone of voice that sounds like a real you-know-what..I can't explain it, but for a moment, time stands still and I am frozen until I let someone like that have it! Ha ha ha!! I guess when you are out having fun with friends, you would rather let it go and not let someone ruin the fun...What a damper! Write that letter! In that culture, you don't bring shame to your family like that, especially to paying customers! Just my 2 cents :) Great review!

I tip service and if there is BAD service, and that includes common courtesy...the tip is definitely affected.
We ate at a restaurant which our waitress did not check on us during our meal, walking past us several times. In Wisconsin, most restaurants have free soda refills, and when I had finished my soda, I left my glass at the edge of the table where she could obviously see it empty. Her service in general was bad, and the food left a lot to be desired as well.
We have eaten there in the past, so we know better, the manager was quite accommodating, so when we left we asked for him and gave HIM the tip, with instructions that it was NOT to go to anyone else.
MAKE it a great day!!

appalled you and your friends were treated like that. I was very glad to read you took it to the manager who was apologetic and more accommodating. I hope there was some sort of repercussion for the waitresses behavior which is completely inexcusable.

I find it ironic that someone (apparently) of another ethnic background would choose to treat your group in such a shabby manner.

We noted the same thing-- the irony.

Virginia,
Sign Language isn't universal, in fact, British sign language uses a two handed alphabet while we use a one handed alphabet. There is a universal sign language called "Gestundo," but even that requires some translating.

I find it ironic that someone (apparently) of another ethnic background would choose to treat your group in such a shabby manner. Surely she has been exposed to idiots assuming things about others based on color, sex, or language..?!?

Absolutely amazing.

And yes, it is the _restaurant's_ responsibility to ensure the people that are their primary contact with customers behave in a civil manner.

Very well said.

I give you credit. I would have been so angry that the waitress would have had little trouble understanding me. Is sign language universal? What I am trying to ask, do the Japanese (or any other culture) sign the same way we do? It doesn't really matter, I guess. Such disrespect should never be tolerated in any public place.
My little granddaughter, Emily, learned to sign from her maternal aunt who is a teacher of deaf children...only so she could communicate with some of her aunt's students. I am afraid she would have had some signs for that waitress had she been there - and rightfully so.

Virginia - and have a Happy Holliday season.

you had such a rotten experience with this waitress! She should be fired as I'm not sure sensitive training would be beneficial in her case--she doesn't sound "compassionate." She would only tolerate her patrons and as a paying customer, you certainly don't want to be condescended to either.

Maybe there's an opening for such a waitress in Iraq? *grin*

with the server. I don't know whether it was due to ignorance or impatience, but there is no excuse for being treated that way by someone whose job depends on how she interacts with people. The manager ought to reprimand her, if not fire her.

Fortunately, you seemed to have had better service from the chef and manager. Plus, as you wrote, you've eaten there before without a problem, so it's hopefully an isolated incident, not the norm, with that restaurant.

Why in the heck would someone who works for tips ACT that way??? And I'm gonna tell you, you're a lot nicer than me! LOL In a Japanese restaurant where I can SEE the food being cooked and I'm SURE they're not going to spit in it... I'm gonna raise a ruckus long before it gets to be dessert time!

But if I read this correctly... I don't think you should be dumping on the restaurant if the servitor was the one that unpleasant.

Sometimes people who are serving you are problem rather than the owners of the establishment. Yet, I would say that you should still be angry because its the restaurants responsibility to keep their employees in line.

I sympathize with you because I have a younger brother who is deaf and I often go out with him and other people of the deaf community. When I go out with them, I find myself very infuriated often times because of how inconsiderate people can be. Not only that but just blatantly rude and prejudice. Most people tend to look at deaf people as if there were something wrong with them and also a nuisance. I hate it because people cant deal with something that is different, because that's simply what deaf and hard of hearing people are... just different. We are all different.. so that should not be an issue, but as you posted here.. it is an issue.

Thanks For Writing something like this. Many people are not aware of the problems that deaf people are subjected to.

I am sorry to hear that this happened to you and hope that less of this occurs to you and your friends in the future.

John--
The restaurant is Domo 77 in Wheaton. I so hesitate to give them bad publicity because they are an excellent restaurant and my husband and I have eaten there before and did not encounter problems. I am hoping that with some sensitivity training for their staff, that this will not happen to others. I'm drafting a letter today.
