Simply Super for Stainless Steel Surfaces

Written: Feb 3, 2009 (Updated Feb 3, 2009)
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Easy to use; no chemical odor; cleans and shines in a single application; inexpensive
Cons:Single purpose product; limited availability in "home" version
The Bottom Line: Treated surfaces resist fingerprints and watermarks requiring less frequent cleaning of stainless steel appliances.  Easy-Off Stainless Steel Cleaner with ProShine meets all manufacturer's claims and more.

Every so often, a product comes along that performs exactly as promised by the manufacturer.  Easy-Off Stainless Steel Cleaner with ProShineTM really does leave behind a streak-free shine on stainless steel appliances, sinks, countertops and barbecue grills.  Many similar products achieve similar results but few of those successful cleaners are as easy to use and inexpensive as Easy-Off.

Reckitt Benckiser Inc. offers a professional version of this product in a 17-ounce aerosol can and the home version in an 8.5-ounce spray bottle.  Both products are formulated to remove dirt, grease and fingerprints but only the home version contains ProShine, a specially designed polishing agent that gives the much sought after streak free shine with minimal effort.

Dealing with the chemical odor most cleaners emit when solution meets steel is not a problem with Easy-Off.  What the manufacturer describes as a pleasant fragrance is nearly non-existent.  The only listed components are monoethanolamine, alcohol ethoxylate, fragrance and no phosphates.  There is a cautionary note on the packaging warning that the product may cause skin and eye irritation so using rubber gloves and special care when applying the solution is wise.

Three Steps from Grime to Sublime...

We rejuvenated our 1950s-era kitchen with a few new stainless steel appliances that match the older, existing sink, cooktop, hood and oven.  The former owner provided us with a basket of cleaning supplies when we closed on this house and that included a gritty, powder cleaner for the stainless appliances.  The powder worked fairly well but I noticed minute scratches on the brushed surfaces from using the cleanser.  That sent me on a mission to find a less caustic product.

I once dreaded the time spent polishing the stainless appliances, it seemed like a never-ending endeavor with only fair results.  Easy-Off is the first product that cleaned and polished our new and older appliances with minimal effort and great results.  With regular use, fingerprints fail to smudge the area around the refrigerator handles and spills seem to wipe up without a trace.

The use instructions are simple:

1. Turn nozzle to "on" position

2.  Spray two to three times onto the surface, covering a small area at a time

3.  Wipe with a dry cloth or paper towel, no rinsing is necessary

4.  For heavily soiled areas, repeat steps one through three.

The clear liquid solution requires no buffing and no drying time before wiping the area.  The resulting brilliant shine appears immediately and seems to hide small scratches.

This is a single purpose product; its intended use is for stainless steel and only stainless steel, certain ceramics (polished glass) and chrome.  The manufacturer warns about potential damage when using Easy-Off on painted or laminated surfaces.

Of the products I tried, Easy-Off is the mildest and most effective stainless steel cleaner.  Method puts out a similar product that does nothing but waste our money.  Barkeeper's Friend offers great products that require a bit more elbow grease.  For ease of use and beautiful results, I highly recommend Easy-Off.
