Probably good if it would have worked...

Written: Nov 09 '01
Pros:Cost effective, small, doesn't run hot
Cons:Doesn't work with cable companies that do not offer static IPs!
The Bottom Line: If it had functioned I bet I would have loved it. But be sure to contact your cable co and ask if it will work with their system!!!

This router was given to me by my grandfather who bought 2 of them by mistake. I was very excited because I had read all about these Linksys routers and how easy they were to use and eliminated the need of having a computer running software to share the internet connection (in my case a Windows 2000 Server running ICS). I unpacked everything set it all up. I logged into the router fine to set it up, rebooted everything and nothing happened. I could see on the activity lights that it was trying to send data out (contacting the DHCP server for an IP) but was getting no response back. Then I noticed the MAC address sticker on the bottom. I knew then I was out of luck. My cable company assigns IP addresses to MAC addresses on their customers' ethernet cards. After talking to a tech at the cable co. I came to find out that they do not support ANY routers or sharing of their connection and that doing so would void their support. Basically I told them they sucked and I would move on. I lied. Anyways, this router lacks the ability to mirror the MAC address of your registered NIC. Therefore it will not be given an IP from the cable co.'s servers. The version 2 of the Linksys routers (1 and 4 port models) now have the option of inputing the MAC address you would like the cable company to see. This is what was missing from the first version and I can't believe they didn't think of this. Oh well. Sorry i cannot offer any insights into how good it performs, but I assumed many would want to know that it has some issues. If you are buying this item online be sure to CALL and ask if it is the 2nd generation of them. Should be designated by a v2 after the model number. My 2 cents.
