BID THEM MAKE HASTE

The Bottom Line The desire for speedy arrival betrays anxiety at very least.

Barnardo: Have you had a quiet guard?
Francisco: Not a mouse stirring.
Bernardo: Well, good night.
If you do meet Horatio and Marcellus,
The rivals of my watch, bid them make haste.

Foreshadowing is taking place now. We will soon know that odd things have been making this dark sentry duty anything but quiet. WS has been denigrated by no less than Voltaire for having evoked the mouse as a measure of auditory perception. But I think we are close to seeing, even in these opening lines, that Hamlet is nothing if not a modern drama.

We need not assume that rivals means, er, rivals. The accepted wisdom is that partners is meant, though the Latin antecedent of rivals connotes a stream and possibly two souls approaching from either side to partake of same. It is not clear whether Dr. Raffel has erred in assuming the term applies to both Horatio and Marcellus. There are texts which apply it only to Marcellus.

Indeed, why is Horatio seen as a sentry or guard, since he will emerge as Hamlet's friend and social equal? One answer is that Hamlet himself appears on some levels to be without class consciousness. There is also evidence that the two have been, or are, fellow students and, in the language of the day, are indeed gentlemen. And there is further evidence, in subsequent statements, that the reason for Horatio's presence is to do what he ends up doing: investigate the ghost who came the night before.

BID THEM MAKE HASTE. This is the key phrase that sets these lines in place. It is lonely here in the dark with a ghost about, who might appear at any time.
