Re: Nicaraguan beer dynamics (Reply to this comment)
by mrkstvns, in Restaurants & Gourmet
Really??
I had no idea Florida Ice & Farm had their paws in the Nicaraguan and Panamanian breweries --- I always thought they stayed pretty much within the Costa Rican borders.
Thanks for the historical perspective! I'm always surprised here on Epinions at the nuggets of info people can pass on.
Regards,
Mark

Nicaraguan beer dynamics (Reply to this comment)
by crheel94
Back in the 70s and even up to the early 90s, there were two breweries in Nicaragua (one made Tona, the other made Victoria). In the mid 90s they merged to become one. As with most Latin American countries, the lack of competition and protective barriers led to a a rather bland beer market. Brahva, produced in Guatemala by beer giant Ambev, is trying to make inroads but has struggled.
The funny thing is Florida Ice & Farm owns not only the brewery in Costa Rica but also Cerveceria Baru and half of the Nicaraguan brewey. Part of the production line in Nicaragua came from a defunct beer rival in Costa Rica.

Ice Cold Beer (Reply to this comment)
by Pantagruel
"I don't believe there's anywhere in Nicaragua without at least a few dozen ice cold coolers chock full of ice cold brewskis."
And here I thought it was only us gringos who drank cold beer.
