for the wonderful and supportive comments. I'm finding my way around this beautiful place with my sister steering the wheelchair and me riding along nodding like a Rajah! My love to to you all and I'll be in touch from time to time as pain and meds permit.

Re: Thanks (Reply to this comment)

After a 'honeymoon' phase of being "so nice, and so funny" and not always insisting on his own needs, he had a short, bad patch and has now rallied (not to mention adjusting to the new levels of meds). Has 'let go' of apartment and old stuff. Talks of getting to the computers next week; sounds able to manage it.
I'll try not to overreact to future ups and downs.

I just found out today you were doing the updates on Ed. I was wondering about him and appreciate your letting us all know. I am wishing the best for him and sounds like the hospice is a good thing for him now that his affairs are all handled.

He has improved a lot in the last few days: adjusting to the meds increase; awake and fully aware at the usual times again. Hoping to spend some time in the sunroom, via wheelchair, tomorrow. Comfortable for the last two days. I am so relieved!

I'm sure these updates are difficult for you WW, but they are much appreciated by all of us who have been touched by Ed over the years.
Ed is in all our thoughts - I'm hoping he can get just a little more comfortable...

In just two days Ed's condition has deteriorated ... (Reply to this comment)
by wordwalker
to the point where he cannot remember the 'bad night' the nurses told him he just had, due to the meds they had to give him. His voice was weaker, and he needed to end the call in order to sleep. I shall speak to the front desk first from now on, not to wake him.
I do not think that he will make it to the computer room.
When I told him again how everyone loves him and sends hugs, he said he hoped "they would all understand". I'm not certain if he was referring to the lack of future contact or not, but I reassured him.
My dumb cat, Garibaldi, rubbed his face on the phone and purred, and I relayed this message as well. (What is that line in A DEATH IN THE FAMILY about "blind animal sympathy"?)
I promise to keep my eyes open, as best I can, and to keep everyone informed.

is it so hard for us? Ed has accepted all of this with so much grace, but I feel like gnashing my teeth and tearing my hair. I know I am not the only one. I am not a good warrior ...

Re: Comfort.... (Reply to this comment)
by wordwalker
Mostly, I am so lucky.
Ed is getting comfortable, but apparently became weak enough at home to need greater strength in the legs before he can spend time in the computer room. He is working toward this, with a walker, and looking forward to leg massages as well.
He recently enjoyed a visit from a twenty-pound cat named T. J., who of course took one look at him and then crawled up into Ed's open arms and lay there purring.
I call as often as I can. I am so lucky.

He had slept all day today, was still exhausted but pleased with the place, which has everything he needs and good food. Knows where the computer room is and will get there when he can. Wants all to know he has arrived safely and is okay.

Thanks for keeping us informed and able to stay in touch. I do wish Ed could find comfort in active oxygen therapies. I've read of such good results about recirculatory hemoperfusion if he's interested. It would take away his pain at the least and perhaps save his life for a while. Thanks again.

I spoke to Ed early this evening; he had done everything that remained to be done by him and had only to await the movers and then the hospice transport tomorrow. All your good wishes, hugs and such were passed along and much appreciated. He will contact me in whatever way is most convenient for him after settling in, and I shall post accordingly.
