WHICH WEATHER CAN YOU WEATHER?

Jan 01 '06 (Updated Feb 14 '06)

The Bottom Line I joined 42ENGLISH'S write off to contribute my experiences with weather.

As I slowly work on polishing a number of real reviews, I thought I'd post another write-off entry that helps reveal a little bit more about me, Steve Lee. So, I have to start by saying that I agree with 42ENGLISH when she says that 2005 was a heck of a year as far as weather goes. So, for my 156th contribution to the Epinions.com website, and my first contribution in the 2006 New Year, here are my thoughts on 42ENGLISH's questions in her WHICH WEATHER CAN YOU WEATHER? write off.

1. Do you like a hot or cold climate?

I don't do well in the heat. I grew up enduring 20 to 40 below, but now live in the fairly moderate climate of Vancouver, BC, Canada.

2. How do you deal with excessive heat?

Swim. Stay in the shade. Try to get some air-conditioning working. Shower. Sleep naked.

3. How do you deal with excessive cold?

Dress warm.

4. Have you seen a tornado up close? Elaborate.

Williams Lake had a tornado once when I was a kid. I don't remember if I witnessed it from the living room or not, or just saw it on the news. It wasn't anything huge, but it started to form and stayed for a bit, it was a half formed twister, but then went away.

5. Have you experienced a hurricane? Elaborate.

Nope.

6. Have you ever been snowed in? If so, where and for how long?

Was never snowed in when I lived in 20 to 40 below weather, where it would snow for 4 - 6 months of the year. People knew how to handle the weather. When we moved to White Rock, a suburb of Vancouver, and it snowed, it was generally safer to stay inside at home as no one in the lower mainland knows how to drive in the snow, even when it's only a few centimetres of snow. They think they can drive as usual, speeding along, trying to be the king of the road. Yeah, well that doesn't work.

When we lived in Williams Lake my Mom had a half tonne 4 by 4 pick-up truck, which we thought we'd never need in the lower mainland and so she sold it. Our first winter in the lower mainland saw the worst snowfall in ages and we were stuck. So, we would stay home when it snows, unless we absolutely had to go out. We eventually purchased an SUV to help survive when it snows but then everyone else was buying them too and for some reason people think they are invincible in an SUV when it snows. They think they can drive like normal in the snow. They just speed along, with no need to go slow and steady. Yeah, well that doesn't work.

So in the end, we were only really snowed in once, during our first winter in the lower mainland. Even then, we just got out and walked.

But I digress.

7. Are you afraid of thunderstorms?

In our high-rise apartment in downtown Vancouver we can see the thunderstorms over the Port of Vancouver - the huge bolts of lightening. It's eerie. When I was a kid in Williams Lake, we had a small cabin on a smaller lake, Felker Lake, about an hour outside of Williams Lake. During thunderstorms it was cool to watch the huge bolts of lightening streak through the sky above the lake as if the sky was trying to punish the lake.

And then there was that one time when the aliens attacked and they used lightening to start the machines they had buried in the Earth. That scared the crap out of me. And our neighbour, this short, middle-aged guy, was jumping up and down on his couch yelling “Oh my god! I’m so in love! I’m so in love! Oh my GOD!” What a horrible day! Oh wait, all that was just a series of pop culture moments.

On a more serious note, we also get a lot of fog in the lower mainland. Vancouver never used to get a lot of heavy fog but in the last few years, it’s gotten thicker and thicker, coming and lasting more often. It’s eerie being on the 15th floor looking out into a thick soupy whitish grey void.

8. Do you like rainy days or sunny days?

Sunny days are nice provided it's not too hot. Rainy days are ok provided it's not too cold. I hate using umbrellas in the rain. Just give me my jacket and a good hat and I'll be fine.

9. Is your local weatherman usually spot on about the weather?

I gave up on the weather people a long time ago. I do like watching the one on channel nine, she's hot.

10. On average, how lucky are you weatherwise on your vacations?

I'm usually fairly lucky. Best option is to go prepared. I am so easy going that I just go with the flow. I'll be out exploring no matter what the weather is doing.

11. If you were a form of weather, what would you be?

A mix of sunshine and rain, depending on my mood.

12. What would the weather be like on your ideal day?

Sunny and warm.
