My thoughts on writing utensils...

Jan 03 '06 (Updated Feb 14 '06)

The Bottom Line It's like the title says: these are my thoughts on writing utensils...

My entry in sleeper54's "writing utensil" write-off...

Here goes nothing...

Are you a 'clicker' or a 'capper'..??

Well, when I worked at Community Police I grew to love click pens, which is what cops always use.

However, since I began working at my University's student union, I use whatever pen we order in bulk each year to give out to students. You can usually find me with about a half dozen of these pens on me at any one time. It's become somewhat of an in-joke between me and my student union friends - want a pen? Just ask Steve. I carry the half dozen on me mainly because they are a promotional tool and if someone I'm around needs a pen, I lend them one, and then, let them keep it.

Do you prefer a mechanical pencil or an old-fashioned wooden pencil..??

I like old-fashioned wooden pencils. The mechanical pencils always break on me.

I use a variety of old-fashioned woodens, from soft to hard, I love to draw mountainscapes, seascapes, florals, gardenscapes and animals among other things using wooden pencils.

Have you ever written a note (or more!) using a highlighter..?? Did you feel 'OK' about that..??

I've never written a note with a highlighter. I've highlighted things using highlighters, but even then, I never understood why people highlight. My main use for a highlighter I've found has been to highlight lists of names that I'm contacting for various purposes.

If I need to remind myself of something in a book, I've tended to underline passages. I like doing this because it also allows me to scribble notes into the columns or in white space at the end of a chapter. I never used to write in books but I do now.

Anyway, speaking of highlighters, The Onion: America's Finest News Source had an insightful article in November about the CIA and its use of black highlighters:

Have you ever had a 'writing utensil' embarrass you..?? (By leaking, breaking, making an inappropriate noise, etc.)'

Not really. I've had them leak and it's been more annoying than embarrassing. It's not like I had it go all over say, a fancy white dress shirt or leak all over my hands or onto my leg next to my groin area.

Have you ever used chalk on a real chalkboard..??

Yes. In school, if the teacher asked students to put their answers up on the board.

For a time when promoting stuff for my student union, we'd write in the top right corners of chalk boards messages for people to see. A dozen or so of us would go out at 7am in the morning when the school opened and leave messages about events on the boards.

Have you ever 'clapped erasers' after school..??

Not as any sort of punishment. I used to help my elementary school teacher with work that needed to be done at the end of a term and at the beginning of a term - help setup the classroom and organize things, and sometimes cleaning stuff was needed, and I'm sure cleaning chalkboard erasers was something I did from time to time.

Do you share your 'writing utensils' with family, co-workers, strangers..??

See my note about student union pens above.

Other than that, I don't really give out pens or pencils. There may have been times during drawing or art classes when I leant out pencils to a student who was missing say a "4B" or "2H" pencil, or some kind of chalk or graphite pencil, but other than that...

What is the strangest thing you have ever done with a 'writing utensil'..?? Was it legal in Connecticut..??

I don't know about Connecticut, but I've never really done anything strange with my utensils. I've never like, say, picked my nose or masturbated using any of my writing utensils.

Have you ever reviewed a 'writing utensil' on Epinions..?? (Go ahead . . .pimp it you bad girl..!!)

Nope. And I'm a guy, not a girl. Whether or not I'm bad is also up for debate. But if you're a hot, attractive girl and want to spank me because you think I've been bad, well, we can talk about that.

But I digress.

What is the strangest 'improvised writing utensil' you have ever written with..??

When I was eleven years old, I peed my name into the snow.

Has a 'writing utensil' ever changed your life..??

It's helped me draw some pretty nice stuff. A drawing that I'm actually happy with can feel somewhat life altering. Same with writing. I do creative writing and brainstorming in notebooks and I usually use pen, either black or some other color (mainly black) and I've written some fairly amazing stuff that I've been proud of.

Have you ever ran the ink out of an ink pen 'writing utensil'..??

Yeah, lots of times.

Do you think 'writing utensils' have any place in the final achievement of 'world peace'..?

To quote some Jack Nicholson movie, "The pen is truly mightier than the sword."

Have you ever used 'white-out' (or a similar product) to correct an error made by a 'writing utensil'..??

Yeah. I keep notes from important classes (business, etc.) in tiny little notebooks, so I have all the notes for that subject in a small accessible form that I can use in the future. If I make a mistake, to conserve paper, I use white out.

Do you like the phrase 'writing utensil'..??

It's kinda strange isn't it? Like we're going to cook or something... of course, I'm not a crooked accountant so I wouldn't be cooking anything I wrote with a pen.

If you could write 'the great American novel' . . .what 'writing utensil' would you use..??

Well, I'd probably write the "great Canadian novel" because I'm Canadian, not American, but I'd probably be using pen in my notebooks and then type up what I wrote their into my computer, into my Corel WordPerfect program. I also recently purchased Final Draft Scriptwriter's Suite which I'll use to start bringing to life the many ideas I have for scripts, commercials and short videos.

Give us your final thoughts about 'writing utensils'. Make sure you talk about your hopes, your dreams, your aspirations. That will make for some really good reading..!!

Without "writing utensils" of any kind, be they a pen, pencil or a keyboard, I'd have a tough time conveying my thoughts in written form. It would be like the stone age, when we passed down stories, thoughts and ideas via word of mouth. And that's all I have to say about that.
