Very nice write up. I haven't heard several of the albums on the list, but I have to completely agree about Franz Ferdinand (I got seasons One and Two of Arrested Devlopment for Christmas), and also what you said about Sleater-Kinney; I saw them open for Pearl Jam last year (sounds funny to say that, it really wasn't long ago...) and I was very dissapointed with the amount of people who left to get drink while they played before coming back to see the main act. Not being a huge Pearl Jam fan myself, I actually prefer Sleater-Kinney.

Terrific writeup, of course. I sort of feel surprised that you could listen to a new album every other day and not have any faves i haven't heard about. Then again, i make it hard by having heard of so many things, so if nothing else it's nice to have your support on so many albums in the "Meh" section.

Besides, your top three picks are all albums i think are terrific, though i don't expect them to all fit my Top Ten. I still want Vanderslice to rock out again, twice as much as he did before; then again, i'll want the same from Antony Johnson's No! Wait! Now I'm a Stegasaurus! come the 2007 awards, so perhaps there's a pattern here.

Are you serious about the Constantines/U2 thing, btw? I've only heard maybe two of the songs, but i remember them being discordant garage rock. Have they changed, or is this my senility in action? I'd hate for it to be the latter; i'm only 32. Or at least that's the age my memories go up to. Oh god, it's worse than i thought...

cheers,
- Brian

Hey Jonathan,

You were right about potential overlap on the albums. But geez, who'd have thought we'd overlap on 4/10 of the top 10, have two of those albums in the exact same place, and all four in the same order? Not to mention that if I extended my top 10 to 20 or 25, Sage Francis, Stephen Malkmus (who was just out of my top 10), Antony, and maybe Vanderslice would've been in there.

And consider that three of your notable misses were in my top 10, and maybe, just maybe, you'll get around to those. :o)

Glad I could help push you toward the Broken Social Scene at least.

executive producer Dave Newfield deserves a MacArthur Fellowship for putting all of the album’s disparate elements— contributed by no less than fifteen artists— into something that emerges as a coherent statement about creation

I especially appreciated this sentiment because I think some other places of criticism have unfairly criticized Newfeld for overproducing the album and obscuring some of its beauty, but I felt, even upon first listen, that that thing was held together as well as it could be with how bulky it is, and how bulky it doesn't sound.

Your Franz paragraph reminded me of the guy at Pitchfork who so heartily defends his Fiery Furnaces. As a person who owns (and enjoys) albums by each band, but certainly could care less whether either one ever put out another album, I don't get it, but someone's gotta stick by these backlash-victimized bands.

With Vanderslice, I'll agree with you on how intriguing his writing is. And indeed, the production is sublime; a product of someone who knows their way around a studio, that's for sure. Yet, this album has not gotten much playtime on my iTunes, and especially not in my car. As a vocalist, his smooth and restrained manner does not resonate with me much. C'mon John, get wild, do something that makes me believe your pulse can push above that of Hannibal the Cannibal, just for a moment or two. Despite that, I even thought the album was great initially, but then I really started to sort the lyrics out for myself, and the traces of hope that exist are so obscured by the depressing and/or nihilistic sentiments, at times it was almost too much to bear. That I cared enough about it to really dig in and sort it out has to count for something. It's a nice challenge, but one that I felt, in the end, didn't ultimately reward me as much as I'd've liked.

Past that, you're convincing me to give a second thought to Junior Senior. Not that I've looked into them enough to even have an opinion on this album, but from what I had heard about them, didn't sound like my bag. It's easy to be lazy and avoid enticement when you're student teaching and not getting paid, and your CD purchases are on a strict budget. But once I start getting some pay, I might give it a go. January/February isn't looking so promising anyhow.

Anyhow, great piece here. Happy New Year!

peace & love,
Eric
