Wracking my brain to try to recall all the movies that I saw in 2004 led to a resolve to list the ones I see in 2005. Unlike most New Year's resolutions, I managed to keep that one, which enables me to look at a whole year's movie-watching. What I watch is affected by what is on cable (especially Turner Classic Movies) and what from my rental queue Blockbuster.com sends me (which is hardly ever what I have placed at the top of my queue...) Jacksommersby (whose acerbic presence I miss a lot) sometimes suggested that I didn't watch any movies made more recently than 1980. My tv may usually be tuned to TCM, but I knew that wasn't true. More than a quarter of the movies I watched in 2005 date from this millennium (and 44% from the 1980s onward): before 1920: 2 1920s silents: 6 (2 of which I'd seen before) 1930s sound films: 52 (5 of which I'd seen before) 1940s: 52 (10 of which I'd seen before) 1950s: 42 (5 of which I'd seen before) 1960s: 29 (9 of which I'd seen before) 1970s: 25 (9 of which I'd seen before) 1980s: 17 (3 of which I'd seen before) 1990s: 48 (4 of which I'd seen before) 2000s: 98 (3 of which I'd seen before) total 371 (40 of which I'd seen before) (and 118 of which I posted reviews or express reviews hereon) --- Although the nationality of a film production is frequently not straightforward, using the language and/or where the director is from, I have coded the films not in English as German 21 Italian 20 French 18 Chinese 14 (of which half were made in pre-annexation Hong Kong) Japanese 12 Spanish 8 Latin American 6 Taiwanese, Russian, and Thai, 2 each and one each Armenian, Azberjani, Danish, Hungarian, Indian (in Hindi), Iranian, Mongolian, Palestinian, and Polish. (Total: 113, 30%) In that I was working on a list of best post-WWII German movies, I think that that number is untypical, but otherwise the distribution seems usual). ---- By genre A number of the titles are movies I don't remember, and most have elements of romance and/or melodrama. Of those I remember well enough to categorize by genre, 77 were thrillers, of which 32 might be classified as noirs or neo-noirs 57 comedies 38 war movies 21 documentaries 16 westerns 14 musicals 6 horror movies 2 sci-fi --- Below, ordered by year of release are all the movies I saw in 2005, with the year of release and my number-of-star ratings in parentheses, and the month, followed (usually) by the month in which I saw it.
