The Bottom Line Go get a puppy, what are you waiting for?

For two years now, my children have been begging for a cute little puppy. You know how it it goes... the kids come across a bundle of fur on a calendar and then they look at you with puppy eyes and say, "Aw, Mom, wouldn't it be nice to give a puppy a home?" Or a neighbor walks by with yapping mass of hair attached to a leash and the kids fall over each other trying to pet the jumping ball of energy.

"Aw, Mom, when can we get our own dog?"

Yes, for two years I've held the kids off with promises of "Someday we'll get a dog." The three of them finally pegged the hubby and I down and demanded an actual date "that a real, live puppy would enter our home."

So like any good parents, we promised them that we'd get a dog during spring break of 2006.

So what the heck happened?

I found a cute West Highland Terrier on the internet. She was just ten weeks old and had a cute little face with dark black eyes. Heck, it wouldn't hurt to take a look. After all, I've brought the kids to pet stores "just to look" and we've always managed to walk away. It was the beginning of Christmas break and we had an extra kid staying with us. I had to find a cheap means of entertainment, so I announced that we'd stop and look at the Westie at a family owned pet store.

When we arrived, the cute Westie on the internet was in the arms of another woman. Ah well, I thought, there will be other ones. The kids went to look at other dogs and we came across a Maltese, our second pick when we were narrowing down breeds. We took the Maltese outside to play and my youngest child ended up being quite scared of the frisky puppy. So we trundled back inside and discovered that the lady holding the Westie decided to think about it some more.

The gal at the store brought the Westie out back and from the moment she touched the ground, my kids started pleading. "Aw, Mom, she's so cute!"

"Aw, Mom, she's such a nice doggy."

"Aw, Mom, can we take her home?"

Take her home? Wait a minute kids, we had a deal. Spring break, remember?

I picked her up and something inside of me went "uh, oh." Remember the feeling of falling in love? Remember those "I want to be with you" feelings when you discover someone? Good grief. I was falling in love...

With a dog?

So now we have a new family member. Her name is Kaycie and she's the cutest bundle of white. She started responding to her name by the second day. We're learning the ropes about potty training and she's finally getting the hang of it. She's learning that it is not a good idea to start squatting under the Christmas tree.

Why didn't someone warn me that getting a puppy is like having a newborn baby all over again? I'm back to operating on interrupted sleep, after a few blissful years of no one waking me up during the night. At least with a newborn, you can stay inside in the dead of winter. A puppy needs to go outside in the middle of the rain. I keep chanting to myself, "This too, shall pass," whenever I wake up at two in the morning.

But just like a newborn baby, Kaycie has a way of gazing at me with complete adoration as she lays her head on my lap.

Awww...
