The Importance of Vertical Rating
by bkalafut | Jan 10 '06
The best reviews will not rise to the top, nor will the worst sink, nor will the garbage be buried, unless current users rate old reviews.

"The possibility that others will see something nefarious in your actions is perhaps more real than you or several earlier commenters seem willing to acknowledge. Their response might very well be hidden by design rather than your out in the open rating. Just something to consider. "

One could say I have a bit of an attitude problem, in that I really don't care if I end up on users' block lists if it's for reasons I look on with disdain. If somebody really thinks that one cannot give a bona fide rating to a review of a product because one's own review is competing with it for pennies, that person, to me, is a worthless Epinionator. Granted, that "worthless Epinionator" may have a higher trust rating than I do--so be it.

I'm here on Epinions because I like giving my opinion and brushing up on my written English in a frivolous way and because I like the site and want to contribute. Refraining from rating because little-minded folks would interpret it uncharitably isn't part of that.

That's my bad attitude and I'm sticking to it :-) . If somebody doesn't like my rating the proper thing for them to do is to rate the review themselves!

Anyway, thanks for commenting. You are right--looking at old reviews while rating new reviews is another easy way to do vertical rating. I'm looking for a place to work a link to your piece on the practice into this article.

A subject near and dear to my heart.

There is a link on my user page to an essay that explains my own views on vertical rating, should you or anyone care to read.

The easiest way to 'vertical rate' is to simply stop and read/rate the older three reviews of something when you rate that new review. Sure it becomes a bit more problematic when there are 30 or 300 reviews, but those often have recent reviews rated by current standards.

The saving point is that the vast majority of the older stuff is 'over-rated' by current standards so perhaps just concentrating on the higher rated stuff will indeed be beneficial. There is really no need to concentrate on rating 5 year old 'SH' reviews, IMHO.

I am still not real comfortable reading and rating other reviews before I write my own. Lest it 'influence' my own review.

The possibility that others will see something nefarious in your actions is perhaps more real than you or several earlier commenters seem willing to acknowledge. Their response might very well be hidden by design rather than your out in the open rating. Just something to consider.

Anyway, great way to bump the idea of 'vertical rating' to the top of pile of Eps things to consider.

I was accused of doing it by a rather churlish sort who frequently posts on the message boards. Forget that my ratings were right on target--it never crossed his mind that finding the only reviews of Chateau Grand Traverse winery to be either lousy or off-topic could very well have been why I wrote a review a full two years after my visit!

Sure, there are ways to "game" the system but anyone who thinks they can make significant money that way or get away with it is a fool. Regardless, vertical rating is the best thing to prevent such abuse--if a few current users have rated a review you're much less likely to be able to get it unfairly downrated in a single click.

Yeah, I'd hope there aren't people so misguided as to think that would be a practice nobody would figure out. Or that wouldn't make them look pathetic.

Which of course means that there are people I could see doing just that. They were probably already doing it anyway.

Vertical rating is important. It can also be fun. When I'm actually interested or considering "consuming" something, I vertical rate. And I always do some vertical rating before posting my own reviews.

Could it be gamed in order to have the lone VH? Yes, but everything on epinions can be gamed. Don't let that fact prevent you from doing the right thing. If you want to avoid the appearance of evil, don't enter the first-review contest after vertical rating.

If you go ahead and rate the reviews that came before the one you're about to write: if you hold enough sway, your SH or H rating could push that review down from a Very Helpful, leaving yours to come as (possibly) the lone VH in a category, qualifying you for an entry into the monthly contest.

Hmm...

I've been revisiting some of my old reviews for products that are somewhat dead, because many of my early reviews just well SUCK. I've also visited some of the other reviews for the same products, to see if I'd read them a long time ago and in a few cases I did revise my rating, or posted a comment if they made a comment that didn't hold up anymore.

And I've also been looking to see if there are products or books or websites that I've used that either:

1. Haven't been reviewed at all; or
2. Don't have many reviews; or
3. Haven't had many recent reviews.

And I've been bookmarking some to revisit so I can write a review. I try not to read other reviews though before I write my own, so I can be sure that my thoughts are my own and not someone else's. It's not always easy to do though.

But I totally agree with your article and I'm going to link to it from my profile page as it's something we should all do as time permits.

I try to do this every now and then, but it's sometimes so hard to keep up with all the new stuff comin' in that there's not enough hours in the day to vertical rate too.

Still, I try to at least scan through a couple categories every week or so.

Good luck fightin' the good fight!

I too think that vertical rating is important, because it helps to spread out the updated and more in-depth reviews from the ones back in the day that just needed a paragraph or two to be VH.
