Lexmark Z33 Color Jetprinter...A++ [UPDATED]

Written: Nov 12 '01 (Updated Apr 24 '02)
The Bottom Line: Well made, efficient, quiet and not very expensive. Keep checking back for updates on my ownership!

LEXMARK Z33 Color Jetprinter...it's approx. 12.6"H x 17.6"W x 19.5"D (with tray extended) & 6.7"H x 17.6"W x 8.3"D (with tray retracted). The print resolution for black is up to 2400 x 1200 dpi, while the color is up to 2400 x 1200 dpi. It can print black up to speeds of 9 pages per minute, and up to 5 pages per minute for the color print speed. Surprisingly the noise level while printing is only 44.1 dBA, which is quiet compared to many printers out there on the market today.

The Z33 Color Jetprinter uses thermal inkjet and dual head technologies with a weight of 5.3 lbs. As in the picture, the paper loading tray folds down and extends upwards when needed to hold paper. The folding function is great, it acts as a dust cover and keeps all the dust out, which means no cleaning! The only bad thing is since it does fold, it is curved to flow with the design of the printer, and when you have the loading tray opened and extended the paper curves. This only happens when you have a lot of paper in the loading tray, and it is kept there for a short period of time, so I keep reloading the paper when it runs low. As for the exit tray, there is no problem, just a concern, personally it's too short. This print literally spits out black text documents and they end up landing on my floor. This baby has a lot of spunk, so common sense would tell you the printer tray needs to be extended to actually catch the paper.

It's "Solution Centre" is pretty good, visually nice and very easy to use. One of the options is to have the printer actually talk to you, talk about high tech. When this printer begins to print a voice comes from your speakers and says, "Printing started," then it says, "Printing completed." Occasionally when you run out of paper it says, "Please load paper into the auto-sheet feeder." This is about the loudest thing associated with the printer, and if you don't like it, it can be turned off.

I've heard people say that the ink cartridges are expensive to purchase, but I haven't bought one yet, one color and one black ink cartridge comes included in the box pre-packed. The only thing you need to buy is the USB cable to hook it up to your computer, printer drivers and a users guide is also included in the box. I would like to see the colors in separate cartridges though, so when one color runs out, you don't have to replace all of them.

Guess your wondering how I got it for FREE??? Well it came with an IBM computer that I purchased just a month ago. It was free with the purchase, so I don't know how much you will pay for it in the stores, but online they are selling for approx. $130.00 CDN that is, so they are not all that expensive.

So far so good, I have had it almost a month now and it is working like a charm. It's really quiet, you can print things off at night and wake anyone up, it prints really fast black text documents, but a little slower on the color pages. Overall its a great printer I am pleased with it and I would definitly buy more products from Lexmark, the craftsmanship is good and sturdy.

UPDATE:
As of today, April 24, 2002, I figured it was way past-due to actually catch up on the last several months since I first written this review. Everything is still running smoothly, no major problems, the most excitement was when Lexmark updated the drivers for the Z23-33 and I had to download them! Otherwise it been uneventful, until NOW!

I am officially out of ink! Well, black ink that is, I first wrote this review on Nov. 12, 2001 and have done many, many print jobs, several times over. But mostly, it was long black ink papers for school, thus the black ink is gone first.

First you will notice the print quality to decline and if your like me, you will increase the print quality to compensate for this, but according to Lexmark, they: "Don't recommend it." This will use up your ink faster than if you just let the ink fade out on its own.

Now the color is starting to fade a little, but I have already removed the cartridges (which are not very big) and vigorously shook them for a few minutes. This seemed to make the ink go further till I finished my print job. So I recommend doing this to get out of that "out of ink" bind half way through the print job, since Lexmark don't recommend the obvious approach.

That's all for now folks, besides what I told u above everything else is top notch, I still think it's an affordable printer with good quality at a good price. Let's wait and see if I change my mind when I purchase them new cartridges!
