by munkus | Jan 17 '06
I struggled to find a thread through this, so in vain settled upon choreography.

Very possibly the opera I consider the absolute greatest ever written.

I've decided (Reply to this comment)

to follow through and read them all. I'm playing Le Nozze de Figaro from the beginning to get myself in the mood.

I did think about Valse, then Valse Viennoise but in the end I opened the music dictionary at random the V section and stumbled upon something quite neat.

Io perduta, ma meschina doo doo do do do doooooooooooo

There's this big thing happening in Australia at the moment to find the 100 Best Opera Moments thing. The experts have all put Sua madre on the top of their lists, but I still reckon it'll be a big heartstring puller like Nessun dorma or Au fond du temple saint or Un bel di which snares the number 1 spot.

Thanks for the flood of comments!

Valse

Verdiales - A folk dance from Málaga, Spain.

Vidalita - An Argentine country dance.

Now turn them into verbs.

Figaro (Reply to this comment)

My father's uncle was a conductor at the Met in the 1920s and '30s. When he died, his widow got lifetime passes, which she occasionally gave our impoverished family. So starting when I was about seven, I used to go to the opera when they were playing something my parents thought would be appropriate.

Convinced as they were that Mozart was the greatest composer who ever lived, I'd seen Figaro about a dozen times by the time I graduated from high school. I agree about the Countess' arias, and I've always thought Sua Madre was one of the cleverest and most amusing passages in opera. And Barbarina's cavatina is my standard audition piece.

Thanks for the memories...

They would come onstage, stand in the middle, stick their tits out to the audience and belt. Then they would walk offstage.

I had no idea Marilyn Horne was that old.

The biggest problem is going to be Verdi. I mean, fark me, I can't think of a single dance that begins with V.
