I recently rented a car from Dollar at the Albuquerque airport. I had gone through the registration process online before hand and was given an estimate of $153.71 for 4 days. As I always do, I had opted not to get additional insurance. When I arrived in Albuquerque, I presented my printed estimate to the guy at the Dollar counter and stated "I would like to have this plan, but would like to add my wife as an additional driver" ($9.00 extra per day).I was presented with the contract and given instructions to initial here, initial here, sign here, etc. The word "insurance" was never mentioned. I went to the car and drove away, without a second thought. When I returned the car, I was told that I owed a total of $349.90. This additional amount covered the insurance that the desk clerk had slipped into the contract. Despite my protests, they would not back off. Their only response was "you should read everything before you sign it." (Obviously, these people have never been submitted to the paperwork involved in medical insurance or a house purchase). OK. I realize this is true, but besides not wanting to hold the line up for an hour, while reading the contract, I guess it's my fault for being a nice guy and trusting the agent to give me what I had asked for. Some food for thought: you will notice that unlike most car rental companies, you can not do the contract online. You can reserve a car, but not make selections on additional insurance. Secondly, as I discovered while pursuing this matter, the desk clerks receive commissions on any additional charges they work into the contract. Because I signed the agreement, I will never be reimbursed for this. Maybe I'm just stupid or naive, but I've learned a couple of things here. Don't trust anyone at Dollar and read everything before signing, or as in my case, if you are without reading glasses, find someone else to read it for you, no matter how long it takes. Legally they are right. Morally, they are very wrong.
