Funny that you (and many others) say that 'Pelleas et Melisande' is difficult to 'get'. I was immediately entranced by the music in that DVD of the Welsh National Opera production, and it remains as one of my fave operas to this day.

A super-excellent series you have here on opera, worthy of serious publication, and should be required reading for every new opera buff! Thanks, munkus!

to like Madame Butterfly because the two old widows who bought my ticket gave it such high praise. Thank you for validating my true feelings - I thought maybe I just wasn't an advanced enough opera-goer to appreciate it.

Yes, me too. It must be somewhat liberating to throw yourself off a plywood-imitation-stone wall into a pit of foam.

if I were in a Puccini opera, I would choose the one where I got to plunge off the castle wall. The stabbing one is nice, too, but the others lack the oomph of the plunge.
