I know what you mean, NC. I have a few more entries linked on my profile page that will allow you to rate with the button... I guess my profile page is becoming the Just-in for the Software category, as it lists the only reviews which have the rating rules and advisor/CL/TR buttons associated with them as well as counting towards the MPA/MPR lists...

Thanks for stopping by, NC. I appreciate the read and comment.

You said:

You won't find these with the search engine, but Quicken Deluxe 2006 can be reviewed on Epinions now. The bad news is that there duplicate listings that you can choose from...

Thanks for pointing that out. You must have found it via either Google or backing into it from Shopping.com? Unfortunately most 'newbies' to the site will never find it that way. Hopefully the search engine is fixed soon so that we can get reviews of the software category!

I notice that none of the software advice reviews submitted for the write on/off (?) are ging through the software just in list....

I believe that that is due to the fact that they are mapped to the old software category (/cmsw) as opposed to the new software category (/Software) while the Just-In is targetted to the new software category (/Software). Nice, eh? The only reviews that register the TR/Advisor/CL buttons aren't mapped to the Software category...

Hopefully this gets fixed soon!

Re: Where are the CL's on this? (Reply to this comment)

Vince, thanks for stopping by and reading/commenting. Hopefully this will raise the awareness of the issues facing the category.

You queried:

Question: where are the CL’s in all of this? Isn’t it their responsibility to ensure the overall health of their category? Have you been in contact with them?

I have spoken to one of the CL's extensively about this, and he has been very actively working towards the resolution of these issues for quite some time. Many of the observations made in this review came about through discussions that I had with said Lead, and I am sure that Epinions would like to hurry up and get the issues resolved due in part to his diligence in the matter. For whatever reason it seems to be taking a LOOOONNNGG time to fix, however.

And it is quite clear that Epinions does not regularly monitor the categories like they used to BEFORE the various mergers, or this would never been allowed to happen to such an important category. Many thanks to you for bringing this to light!

The fact of the matter is that Eps (at least community care) has been kept apprised of the situation for the past seven months. Message board threads, emails, and Instant Messages have gone back and forth to try and drum up some resolution. I agree that this has gone on entirely too long, but it is in spite of the fact that Eps knows about it; not because of ignorance of the issues...

Once again, thanks for stopping by!

Where are the CL's on this? (Reply to this comment)

Jason,

I have noticed the oddities in the Software Category in passing, but you have done a through analysis of the situation and the problems are far more pervasive then I thought. Question: where are the CL’s in all of this? Isn’t it their responsibility to ensure the overall health of their category? Have you been in contact with them?

And it is quite clear that Epinions does not regularly monitor the categories like they used to BEFORE the various mergers, or this would never been allowed to happen to such an important category. Many thanks to you for bringing this to light!

It is hard to pick, but I'd say that of all the defects you mention, this one is most remarkable.

I agree, and it is also the one that I cannot explain away with a simply bad migration. The product listings that are in the /Software category from prior to the migration cannot be found via a search, yet some of the items that I know were added after the migration (Beyond TV4) can be found. It is confusing. And then the whole thing with Quicken 2006 and TurboTax; that is just amazing...

Your explanation seems spot on...

Thank you!

An incomplete move has been performed, for no clear reason.

That was something I left out of the essay; I have no idea why they would have done this. Part of the YOT(F)C? Did software not match up with the Shopping.com catalog so a change was needed? I can't come up with a convincing answer...

Linking the new category in, per your suggestion, should not be a problem. After all, CLs are CL for multiple categories already. That is existing functionality.

I certainly hope that it is as easy as that. But then if it is, why hasn't it been done yet? ;) The interesting part is that the same thing happened in Hotels and Resorts (I remembered that almost all of their reviews went Preview Category as well), where the section went from /lodg-Hotels-All to /Hotels in July of '05. The big difference there is that the advisors, CL and TR tags are linked to the parent section of /trvl which didn't change so they still work...
