firstcontact21's "Do You Know Canada Quiz" Write Off

Jan 22 '06    Write an essay on this topic.

The Bottom Line O Canada, my home and native land. Think they will take me back?

I was browsing through Epinions one day and came across firstcontact21's profile page. The words DO YOU KNOW CANADA QUIZ was blatantly blazing a hole in my retina daring me to take on the challenge.

I thought to myself "Should I even make an attempt at it? After all I am Canadian. It wouldn't be a fair fight." Then I realized how arrogant that was because, even though I am Canadian, I haven't lived in Canada for 1 1/2 years now. That's long enough to lose brain cells along the way and my memory isn't what it used to be. That explains why I've been taking Ginkgo Biloba lately.

In other words, let's see how miserably I fail. I'm not even studying for this quiz. I'm not even going to check out the links or online help. This one is coming straight from the ol' noggin (and a big one it is).

Let the torture commence.

Part A: Government and Politics

1. (1 mark) True or False: Canada is a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy under the Commonwealth of Nations, an association of independent sovereign states, almost all of which are former territories of the British Empire.

ANSWER: Oh God, a True/False question right off the bat. I have a 50/50 chance at this one so I say... um... er... what was the question? I say TRUE.

2. (1 mark) Who is Canada’s Head of State? Is it:

a. The Governor General?
b. The Prime Minister?
c. The President?
d. The Queen of England?
e. Tony Robbins? Or
f. None of the above.

ANSWER: Tony Robbins? Could be a lot more inspirational than the prime minister (and that's not hard to do). But let's choose the one that doesn't even have to lift a finger to do anything and just be the figurehead that she is... The Queen of England.

3. (1 mark) Who represents Canada’s Head of State in Canada? Is it:

a. The Governor General?
b. The Premier?
c. The Prime Minister?
d. The House of Lords?
e. Tony Robbins’s Sister? or
f. None of the above?

ANSWER: I would choose Tony Robbins's sister but I don't know where she stands on her issues, so my next logical guess would be the Governor General.

4. (1 mark) Name at least one Canadian who has served as Governor General.

ANSWER: Ah, dammit! I hate current events. I'm trying to think of even just one. Um... I know Adrienne Clarkson was the previous one, but I can't remember who the current one is. The two most famous ones were Lord Stanley and Lord Byng (come on, you knew hockey was going to come up sooner or later). Isn't the current one Michaelle Jean?

5. (1 mark) Who is the Head of Government? Is it…

a. The leader of the party with the most support in Parliament?
b. The Premier?
c. The Prime Minister?
d. Tony Robbins?
e. Both A and C above? Or
f. None of the above?

ANSWER: Ah, this is a trick question because it's both A and C, which I guess would be answer E.

6. (2 marks) Name at least two Canadian Prime Ministers.

ANSWER: Just two? There's the first one, the boozehound named Sir John A. Macdonald. Lester B. Pearson for another hockey reference. The flamboyant Pierre Trudeau, troublemaker that he is. Brian Mulroney, the man who brought about the evil GST. Kim Campbell, the first lady to be PM, albeit for a very short time. Then there's Jean Chretien, the guy who talks out of one side of his mouth, and his current successor and flunky, Paul Martin. I certainly hope he gets the boot soon.

7. (1 mark) True or False: Canada has a national political party devoted to breaking up the Country by having one of the provinces separate from Canada to form its own independent nation, and this political party has even served in the capacity of her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition.

ANSWER: Of course we are talking about those from the Bloc Quebecquois, are we not?

8. (1 mark) True or False: Canada is so unimportant on the International stage, that it doesn’t even have its own listing on Wikipedia.

ANSWER: Um.. I going to have to go with False on that one. Just a hunch.

9. (1 mark) True or False: Epinions has a section for writing Epinions about Canadian post secondary institutions (such as Universities and Colleges).

ANSWER: False, because I haven't found a listing in over 5 years.

Part B: Economics

10. (2 marks) True or False: The province of Alberta is the only province or state in Canada that no longer has any accumulated debt of any kind.

ANSWER: This is True, lucky bastards. I hear every person in the province is getting a cheque of $350 as well (notice how I spelled "cheque"). Lucky bastards!

11. (2 marks) True or False: Canadian money is multicoloured.

ANSWER: So True!

12. (2 marks) Canada has a one dollar coin which is commonly known as:

a. The silver beaver.
b. The dollar.
c. The golden smelty.
d. The Loonie. or
e. The dollar.

ANSWER: hehe... you said Silver Beaver. I'm already thinking bad things to say about it. But the answer is the loonie, with the toonie bring up the rear. Have they made the $5 coin yet?

13. (2 marks) What is the approximate current exchange rate of the Canadian Dollar to the US Dollar? That is, answer this question: $1 Canadian Dollar is worth $____ US (if you absolutely have to look this one up to maintain a perfect score, then I will allow you to).

ANSWER: I think the current rate is $0.85 US, but I'm not totally sure. I can't believe the Canadian dollar got stronger. Go figure.

14. (2 marks) What is the name of the trade agreement linking Canada, the United States and Mexico that came into effect on January 1, 1994? Is it…

a. The Canada / US / Mexico Free Trade Agreement (CUMTA)
b. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)
c. The Continental Free Trade Agreement (CFTA)
d. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)

ANSWER: Hello NAFTA, another Mulroney legacy.

Part C: Geography

15. (4 marks) Where is Canada? Is it…

a. North of the United States of America, but somewhat South of (or right next door to) Alaska and also kind of below / next to Greenland?

e. All of the above?
f. Other? Please describe.

ANSWER: I would say F because it's in a world of its own, but technically the answer would be A.

ANSWER: Only if you lived in Winterpeg, but for the rest of Canada the answer is False.

ANSWER: Yes, true.

18. (1 mark) True or False: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada is located on the East Coast of Canada, one of the last large cities before you venture across the Atlantic Ocean.

19. (1 mark) True or False: The province of Newfoundland is on the West Coast of Canada, just below Alaska, on the doorstep of the Pacific Ocean.

ANSWER: False, it always rains in Seattle.

ANSWER: Okay, let's see if high school paid off. Provinces include British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Newbrunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland & Labradour. Territories include Yukon, Northwest Territories and the newly appointed Nunavut.

23. (1 mark) One of our provinces has large oil reserves. Do you know which one? Name it now.

ANSWER: Alberta. They also have no sales tax as a result as well. Bah!

24. (10 marks) Have you ever visited Canada? If yes, where? If no, why not? Describe the geography of your favourite Canadian location.

ANSWER: Visited Canada? No, no, I lived in Canada. Notice the past tense usage of the word "lived". I was born in Vancouver, BC and lived in Richmond for most of my life until almost two years ago when I moved to New Jersey. But I have travelled through the interior of BC, gone to Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, and PEI. I loved going through the Rockies to get to Alberta. That is intimidating to say the least. But mostly I miss the mountains and oceans of BC.

Part D: Entertainment, Sports & Culture

25. (5 marks) Can you name any comedians from Canada? If so, who are they? Please list any that come to mind right now and describe what influence they have had on your life.

ANSWER: Oh boy, where do I start? There's the million dollar man Jim Carey, Dan Aykroyd from the Blues Brothers and SNL fame (plus he's married to Donna Dixon), the late John Candy from SCTV, David Foley from Kids in the Hall (fantastic show) and News Radio, the late Phil Hartman from SNL and News Radio, Eugene Levy from SCTV and the American Pie movies, Mike Meyers from SNL, Wayne's World and Austin Powers, Howie Mandel, Rick Moranis, Catherine O'Hara, Johnny Wayne and Frank Shuster from the famous Wayne and Shuster show, and the list goes on and on and on. I watched every Wayne and Shuster show and loved every moment of it. Their ending song is always still in my head. "Well, I see by the clock on the wall, that it's time to bid you one and all..." Dammit, now you have me singing it.

26. (5 marks) Can you name any Canadian actors? If so, who are they? Please list any that come to mind right now and list any of their works that you really, really like and hold dear to your heart.

There's so many more I can list but I'll be here forever.

I can relate to Michael J. Fox because he's a BC boy and he's my height. He's just an incredible actor and even better person.

27. (5 marks) Can you name any Canadian musicians? If so, who are they? Please list any that come to mind right now and list any of their works that you really, really like and hold dear to your heart.

Paul Anka will have a place for composing "My Way" even though Frank Sinatra made it popular. Diana Krall and Michael Buble... I just love jazz and the provide it with gusto. And I've just been soaking up Nickelback recently just because they are cool.

28. (5 marks) Finally, can you name any Canadian movie directors? If so, who? Please list any that come to mind right now and list any of their works that you really, really like and hold dear to your heart.

ANSWER: Hmm... this is tougher because the only one that comes to mind is Ivan Reitman who did Ghostbusters, Meatballs, and Stripes. And who didn't love those movies? Oh wait, how did I forget Mr. James Cameron? You know, the one who directed Aliens, Terminator, T2 and Titanic? Okay I feel better now.

ANSWER: Currently in the NHL: Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens. The Phoenix Coyotes were once the Winnipeg Jets and the Colorado Avalanche were the Quebec Nordiques (and what a bonehead move to relocate from Quebec only to win the Stanley Cup the following year in Colorado)

Currently in the NBA: Sadly, only the Toronto Raptors. The Vancouver Grizzlies were relocated to Memphis, of all places.

32. (1 mark) True or false: Wayne Gretzky is Canadian.

ANSWER: This is a trick question, right? Isn't he that hockey guy called "The Great One"? Yeah, he's Canadian. Gretzky for PM!

33. (1 mark) Name at least one Canadian beer or beer producer.

ANSWER: Molson and Labatts. Miss my Canadian beer.

Part E: General Knowledge

34. (10 marks) Do you remember when you first heard or learned about Canada? Can you describe this time? Can you describe what you first learned about Canada? Please discuss your thoughts and feelings about your first recollections of Canada now.

ANSWER: There was no first time because I lived with the knowledge of Canada throughout my life, having grown up in the country itself. Learning through osmosis was a frequent thing. But I believe it was the commercials on CBC that showed Canadian history that was interesting. It was fun and educational at the same time. Did you know Superman was co-created by Joe Shuster who is Canadian? Did you know basketball was invented by a Canadian named James Naismith? How about that game called Trivial Pursuit that was invented by two Canadians? Things like that made me become more aware that Canada had done, and will still do, many great things.

35. (3 marks) What colors are on the Canadian flag? What image or symbol is also pictured on the flag? Please describe the flag now.

ANSWER: Red-white-red stripes with a central maple leaf.

36. (2 marks) True or False: The United States is Canada’s largest trading partner.

ANSWER: This is a true fact.

37. (1 mark) True or False: Canada has two official languages: English and French.

ANSWER: Officially, yes. Do we always use it? No.

38. (1 mark) Which animal is an official emblem of Canada? Is it…

a. The beaver?
b. The moose?
c. The Polar Bear? Or
d. William Shatner?

ANSWER: Shatner, it has to be Shatner. He did manage to work with Heather Locklear on T.J. Hooker. Okay fine, it's the beaver.

39. (8 marks) Do you know any Canadians? What are they like? How long have you known them? Why do you know them? Please describe your relationship to them now.

ANSWER: I am Canadian so I guess I know myself. Or maybe I only think I really know myself since does one really know one's own self? Okay since I'm not sure about myself I do know my friends and family that are back home in BC. Why do I know them? Because they were there when I popped out of my mother's womb. I'm sure they are relived that I moved out of the country so I can't embarrass them anymore.

40. (9 marks) Describe your feelings toward Canada. What do you think of Canada as a nation? How do you feel you did on this quiz? Do quizzes like this really matter when it comes to rating how Americans feel about their neighbours?

ANSWER: Canada is a very progressive nation always on the leading edge with social issues. Health care, no matter how much money you pay into it, has many benefits. I know many Americans over here who comment and wish they could adopt a similar policy. I like the multiculturalism that is really the strength of Canada as a nation. It's not about the squabbles between the English and French speaking Canadians but the diversity that lies within the country itself.

I probably bombed this quiz just because I said so. I think a quiz like this, however open some eyes regardless if you are Canadian or not. The trick is to burst out of your own bubble and try to look at the world with fresh new eyes. It moves and changes whether if you are onboard or not.

41. (1 mark) Finally, the very last question... Where are you from (City/Town, State/Province, Country)?

ANSWER: Originally from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada (Richmond more accurately), but now residing in the East Coast of the USA in New Jersey.

I hope I did okay. Extracting all this information from my brain hurt a lot.
