I definatly understand about paying more for 'local ld'.. Here in Texas SBC really hits it hard with in-state calls running about 4 times what an out of state call would run.. (I pay 5c per min out of state and 20c per min in state..)

Wow! That was quite a response and I do appreciate it. It makes me feel a little better about some things, but I still think Alltel is aweful. There is still no excuse for me paying a higher fee to call five miles away than I do to call 1,000 miles away. Also, the people at Alltel have almost always been rude (and obviously uninformed.) I did not deal with that at Aliant. Anyway, thanks again for the input and for explaining many things that Alltel reps could not.

Not unusual issues, but not Alltel either..... (Reply to this comment)

I work for a company that does behind the scenes billing services for Alltel and a bunch of other wireless/wireline companies and I bet I can answer some of your questions.

First: Regarding the rep not being able to talk to you on your girlfriend’s account, that is not Alltel, that is the law. This is based on the Federal Privacy act of 1974 and the Telecom act of 1996 both of which put very very tight restrictions on even accessing accounts for unauthorized individuals. I do believe, however, that this should have been handled in a much more customer friendly way

Secondly: Regarding the ‘3 Taxes’ on your bill while the government only claims two taxes should be charged, this is just a matter of semantics. By definition there are only two taxes in NB, Federal and State sales tax, however, there are fees the government applies to all phone lines (USF fees, FCC fees, Regulatory Fees, etc) that many people incorrectly call taxes, but are government required fees none the less. I have also noticed that Alltel (as well as AT&T) are notorious for breaking down every tax separately so as the consumer will know where their $$ is going. You may actually see two separate listings for state sales tax because they are listing LD and Local charges as taxed separately.

Next: You have an issue with LD charges still being charged after you switched carriers. I will bet a buck that is due to the government requirement of separate intra and interlata ld carriers in your state. Some states require that LD with in a certain range be on a separate carrier than your regular LD. Unless you specifically say otherwise, Alltel could only change your interlata ld legally.

You point #3 is a Nebraska thing.. not Alltel. I remember that Alient also did the same thing way before Alltel bought them. You say you did not pay these fees under Alient but I can assure you that you did, Alient did not add them as a separate line item on the bill like Alltel, but instead, built it into the standard charges.

Alltel has only taken over Alient for just about a year, and having dealt with both companies I can assure you, as they slowly integrate their people and practices in place of Alient’s you will see a big change for the better. What you really should push for if you want a big change is for Alltel to replace the Alient employees and systems.

Most of your issues, however, seem to have to do with all the government intervention that was added in 96 that is just now starting to be enforced. You would have these same questions whether you were here in Texas on SBC or there in Nebraska on Alltel.
