On Past Lives

The Bottom Line Is heaven a parallel universe?

Past lives, reincarnation -- chimeras,
Imaginings that minimize our lives.
We are ourselves, not someone else who was,
If I live on, it is I who survives.

No, no I never was some other soul,
Inhabiting some body now long lost.
We are our bodies, that is all, we're whole,
And irreplaceable at any cost.

That I am here should give you some small hope,
Death's not the end, just as the singer says.
So you are not suspended on a rope,
There's life beyond. And Abba has his ways.

"If bodies are no more, that is a lie."
No, that is what the struggle is about:
To be again, to finally unify
Earth and heaven. And turn us inside out.

Yes, inside out. For what comes from inside
Is all that matters, all that will survive.
Our deepest selves, with Abba unified,
Is what it finally means to be alive.

Why then, you ask, am I not visible?
Concede I am the same, but nonetheless,
A body to be real is physical,
A substance, yes. Where is some flesh to press?

The simple answer is, I am not here,
Save as I am in Abba, thus in you.
None who pass through this world will reappear,
Though you have texts assuming that some do.

Heaven is as much a place as earth,
You taste its truth when you take Abba's Way.
In fact, your eye can measure heaven's worth
By seeing things in a more knowing way.

Past lives, reincarnation -- chimeras,
Imaginings that minimize our lives.
We are ourselves, not someone else who was,
If we live on, it is we who survive.
