The Bottom Line The Bottom Line refuses to ever grow up.

There are many a good movie geared towards kids out there, but several stand out in my mind from both my own childhood and from selections made by the next generation... both my own warped offspring and my neices. This list is a combination of the two, with a few more recent selections tossed into the mix as I know had they been around back then, we would have loved them.

The one thing they all have in common is that they are absolutely suitable for kids, and parents will be able to tolerate watching them (if not totally love them.) I narrowed the list to ten, but as usual that's as far as I got. I just cannot get them into any kind of order...

Neverending Story ~ Possibly one of the best fantasy films ever, I was made to sit through this one about 50 times. It's so wonderfully written and executed that I never minded seeing it popped into the player yet again... tis about a boy who finds himself entering a magical kingdom via the pages of a book, and how he saves them from the Nothing which is threatening to destroy them.

The video arcade is down the street. Here we just sell small rectangular objects. They're called books. They require a little effort on your part, and make no bee-bee-bee-bee-beeps.

Finding Nemo ~ A delightful animated tale of a father's search for his missing son. Very playful and fun, while being extremely colorful and stimulating. All-star voices by folks like Ellen DeGeneres, Geoffrey Rush, Willem Dafoe, and Elizabeth Perkins. This one will keep both kids and adults amused.

Well you can't never let anything happen to him. Then nothing would ever happen to him. Not much fun for little Harpo.

Dr Dolittle ~ I liked the remake with Eddie Murphy, but the 1967 version with Rex Harrison is hands-down the best. Based on the book by Hugh Lofting, this one is about a veterinarian who has the ability to speak to animals. An extremely kid-friendly and fun flick.

I speak over two thousand languages, including Dodo and Unicorn. I had a classical education.

Lion King ~ Disney's animated adventure of a lion cub who wanders out into the big ol' world after he's tricked into thinking he is responsible for the death of his father, the king of the pride. The voices are done marvelously by Rowan Atkinson, Matthew Broderick, Whoopi Goldberg, Jeremy Irons and James Earl Jones. Lots of great songs and a few wonderful one-liners.

What do you want me to do, dress in drag and do the hula?

Mary Poppins ~ A timeless classic from 1964 about a magical nanny, this one will be a hit for everyone in the family. Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke keep this movie hopping, and the songs by the Sherman brothers will be floating around in your head for decades.

Though we adore men individually, we agree that as a group they're rather stupid.

Shrek ~ A reclusive ogre and a chatterbox donkey go on a quest to rescue a princess for a tyrannical midget lord (IMDB.com) Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and John Lithgow provide the main voices to this hilarious CGI fantasy. You will be laughing so hard your sides will ache in places, and so will your kids. Yeah so there's fart jokes. Get over it. Kids like fart jokes... and really, on the scale of things, it is a very harmless amusement.

Princess Fiona: But this isn't right. You're meant to charge in, sword drawn, banner flying-that's what all the other knights did.
Shrek: Yeah, right before they burst into flame.

Pollyanna ~ From 1960: Haley Mills plays a young optimistic girl who moves to a bit of a grumpy town and turns it on its ear. She can take any situation and find some good in it. A very wholesome movie, this, yet very fun (in spite of it's religious tones.) What I like best is that this one reminds us to stop for a minute and enjoy life, to stop looking for the bad in everything...

"When you look for the bad in men, expecting to find it, you surely will." (Lincoln quote on Polly's chain)

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial ~ Drew Barrymore rocked the world as the adorable little girl in this tale of befriending a lost alien and helping him get home again. Very funny in spots, wonderful special effects, and a great messege for adults and kids alike. This one will put you through your emotional paces, and you'll come out the better for it.

How do you explain school to a higher intelligence?

The Sandlot ~ This is one of the cutest movies I've watched in a long while. The boys all have their own various quirks which ring oh-so-true of childhood travails. You have the brainiac, the sports icon, the 'four-eyes', the pudgy smart alec who can pop off the insults so fast your head spins, etc... I think most folks will find a part of themselves in more than one of these characters. The boys did a fantastic job here. All of them.

Let me tell you something kid; Everybody gets one chance to do something great. Most people never take the chance, either because they're too scared, or they don't recognize it when it spits on their shoes.

Harry Potter ~ All of them. Fantastic special effects, wonderful acting, and a brilliant story based on the books of the same name. It is a story of magic and danger and making friends, and over-coming bad odds, and heroism, and doing the right thing, and growing up and and... well, just watch it. Stars Daniel Radcliffe, Robbie Coltrane, Richard Harris, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson.

It does not do to dwell on dreams, Harry, and forget to live.
