Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I don't blame you for using Microsoft products. I probably would, too, in your shoes. (I'm a graphic designer, one of the few occupations that is Mac-centric.)
I don't know what the solution to the monopoly problem is, and I just worry as Microsoft grows bigger and bigger.

I appreciate what you are saying katsat, believe me I do. And most of what you say is true, however, monopoly or not, there always need to be people out there to test and review products, so don't get angry at me. Even if Microsoft monopolized the market, I say, and I'm sure many people will agree with me, that they make pretty good products.
I do think that having a monopoly in an industry is unhealthy for the others in that industry. Microsoft however, seems to be commited to helping and pleasing its consumers, so perhaps that is why they keep dodging the monopoly bullet. There business practices may be suspect, but they are also very smart.
Anyways, if you are asking me why I use Microsoft's products, it's not because I feel I have no other choice. I could use Linux or Apple, and sometimes I do. But I feel that Microsoft's Windows OS best suits me as a novice, but not expert computer user. I wouldn't stop using Microsoft's products even if the Justice Department ruled the had a monopoly, and I won't now. They do a good job at what they do, monopoly or not, and no one is holding a gun to my head to make me use their products.

You're obviously a very intelligent person, as are many other people who are Windows users. What I don't understand is how all these intelligent people are willingly and happily fueling Microsoft's domination of all things computer related - reaching out from the desktop into everything else it can get its hands on (electronic games, telecom, entertainment, news, etc.). Standard Oil in its prime looks puny by comparison. If this were happening in any other industry there'd be howls of protest. But only its dwindling numbers of direct competitors seem to give a damn. (The Justice Dept. sure doesn't seem to care.)
Do you realize Microsoft receives an unbelievable 90% of all profits in software? That leaves the crumbs in the remaining 10% for every other company in the universe to fight over. And this is only the beginning.
It's no coincidence that at least 3 of the richest men in America are from Microsoft. Microsoft earns more than most countries. We might as well imprint money with "In Microsoft We Trust."
Sure you can say, "But it makes my life easier so why should I care." Well, so would a benevolent despot, but as for me, I'd rather live in a democracy.

Just about all you need to know about Windows XP. I have used Windows XP(since January) and even then it was stable and very good performance.
