The Bottom Line Collection of the best fight scenes that will never fail to satisfy your bloodlust
How can you put all the action you see in movies into such a small list? There are plenty of good action sequences to be seen and some are hidden away in some of possibly the most AWFUL movies of all time. I will make a note of these aswell near the end. The movies in this top ten list are not just about the actual fighting contained within but more of the satisfaction you get from the build up and final sequence you get to see. A good fight sequence will always start way before a punch is thrown. (kind of like a good rock track, it'll build you up at the start and then explode into a melody that will get you banging along to the tune when it kicks in). These are the most satisfying and visually pleasing fight scenes ever in my book, check them out! PS Hollywood try but alot of the time fail at making a good fight scene due to alot of the safety rules that need to be adhered to so don't be surprised if there aren't many in this list. Sorry! 1: POLICE STORY AKA COP STORY Bang straight away I'm in with all guns blazing. The Final mall fight scene in this movie is still the best action sequence ever put into a hong kong movie. Glass, baseball bats, knives, kicking, punching, throwing, back flipping, full contact, falls from great heights, motorbikes and clothing rails collide in a breath taking scene that simply knackers you out by the end. Still the highlight of Jackie's career and is amazing to watch. Every fight fan should have a copy. 2:TOM YUM GOONG Tony Jaa impressed everybody with his acrobatical style of muay thai fighting in ONG BAK but the final fight sequence in this film seems so much more satisfying due to the build up it recieves and the raw brutality of the fight. Tony finally loses the plot with a gang of animal smugglers to steal his elephant and gets to work trying to break as many bones he can get his hands on, from necks to arms, feet, collarbones, jaws, spines and joints the raw cracking sounds begin to grate in your ear as he goes to town on the entire gang. The Muay Thai war style fighting is a refreshing sight in the modern martial arts film and the rest of the fight scenes contained within the film never fall short of great. Simply amazing. FYI: There's a well subtitled version available on VCD from Thailand. you can get it from asian movie import sites now. 3:COMMANDO Jonh versus Bennett. Final fight sequence between the muscly Arnold in his prime and a flabby australian guy. Slightly unbelievable but still well put together with a flurry of fists, knives and metal objects within a furnace room. Atmospheric and viscious but enjoyable when Arnold unbelievably pins his assailant to a boiler via a metal pipe, allowing the steam to shoot out of the end. Cheesily good fun and Arnold during his hey day as the king of hollywood action. We salute you govenor! 4:TAI CHI MASTER AKA TWIN WARRIORS Jet li versus an entire monastery of monks. Not one of his best movies ever but the fight sequence versus the monks by far exceeds all the other sequences in the film. The scene is just anarchy with Jet ploughing through hoards of monks with a staff. Pure fantasy and pure enjoyment. 5:THE CRIMSON RIVERS Vincent Cassell versus 2 Nazi yobs. A thoroughly surprising fight scene within a french movie (yes I said FRENCH!) that by right shouldn't be there. But it was put in anyway and just so happens to be a fantastic sequence within a fantastic film. 2 kick boxing nazi's refuse to tell Vincent anything about the death of a little girl due to him being a cop. Vincent the puts his badge and gun down and engages them in a fight that is raw, gritty, fast and better than anything hollywood has come up with in the last 6 years. A surprising treat! 6:STARWARS:EPISODE 2 & 3 Yoda versus Dooku & Anakin versu Obi Wan. Again It's not the entire content of the actual fight as much as it is the build up that preceeds them and then it explodes into a flurry of lightsaber action between the characters. When Dooku pulls out his lightsaber at Yoda I wasn't entirely sure what would happen but when yoda does a flick of his cloak and unsheaths his saber I was thinking "here we go!" and he then lunges a duel that just hits the spot just right. Anakin and Obiwan in episode 3 is also fast and furious and something I have wanted to see as a fan from the start. It will stand the test of time long after the CGI looks dated! 7:ONG BAK Final fight sequence. Alot of the fight scenes within this list are the final scenes. This is a sign of good storytelling with the progress of the story climaxing into a huge end scene. This is true of ONG BAK with Tony pulling out all the stops to do away with the smuggler gang anyway he can. Totally enjoyable and shows off the skills of a very talented individual. Another film that should be in any fight fans collection. A modern classic that owes alot to Jackie and the hong kong stars of past. 8: DRUNKEN MASTER 2 AKA LEGEND OF DRUNKEN MASTER Final scene again that lasts a good 20 minutes. Brilliant fight scene that showed alot of sceptics that Jackie still had it. A vicious fight scene within a factory that allowed Jackie to show the extent of his skills and encorporated alot of new ideas he's acquired since the first outing DRUNKEN MASTER. Top tip: Get a chinese or thai import copy as this has been unedited and has all the fight scene in tact with no cuts (unlike the international version). 9:RAMBO 3 Stick fight sequence at the beginning. A good example of stick fighting that is well built up and has been parodied alot (which can be a good sign of a classic scene). Sylvester stallone trained alot for the fight scene and shows good knowlege of the art. Really enjoyable and better than the rest of the film put together. 10: BLOODSPORT/KICKBOXER Before Jean Claude Van Damme was rubbish...he was good! These two films get put together simply because they were made at roughly the same time and are similar in narrative style. With a final fight scene that does make you want to do the splits. It's more in the editing and dramatic slow mo punches that push it into a certain rythm that allows you to go back and enjoy it again in repeat performances. Perfect popcorn fodder. Shame he's stuck doing forgetful movies nowadays. The time is right for arena fight movies again I reckon. 11:BONUS SCENE: FAMILY GUY, PETER GRIFFIN VERSUS GIANT CHICKEN PARTS 1 & 2. A fantastically over the top parody of all action movie fight/chase sequences I've seen in a long while. Peter and the chicken go fist to fist and foot to foot with each other over a vast open air arena. From the top of a lorry to an office area it really makes you smile from start to finish. But just when you think it's over the chicken returns in season 4 for another round. Brilliant! MOVIES TO KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR: ARMOUR OF GOD Jackie versus 4 leather clad women. GROSSE POINT BLANK Martin comes across fellow assasin Benny "the Jet" and a brief but good fight sequence ensues finishing with Martin jamming a pen into his throat, cue pen mightier than sword pun! KUNG FU HUSTLE Finale ends up in the mother of all fight scenes and the lead character begins to kick the shinola out of the entire chinese underworld. Brilliant movie. ALIEN VERSUS PREDATOR Predator comes head to head with an Alien and proceeds to beat the snot out of each other. Best bit: Predator grab the alien and proceeds to swing it around like a rag doll. KING KONG King Kong goes up against a clan of T-Rex. Furious and brutal but you can't help but cheer for him! Die extinct scum! ENTER THE DRAGON. One word: NUNCHUKAS. WHO AM I? Rooftop fight scene finale. POLICE STORY 2 Playground sequence. RUMBLE OF THE BRONX Gang hideout fight scene. BLADE 2: Final fight sequence between blade and his captors. PREDATOR Arnold versus Predator. Manly trap making and commando elite forces style tactics. Me beat chest now, grrrrrrrrrrr! |
