They usually just drop right in. I don't even have to carefully align it. Just drop it in, and if it doesn't go in, slide it around a bit, and it'll pop in when you got it right. They are keyed so you know which way it goes in.

I actually find the old CPUs with pins harder, since they can be bent, and you're wondering why it won't go in. When you figure out why, you now have to figure out which pin(s) were bent so you can fix it.

I've replaced everything there is in a pc at least twice except I've only done a motherboard 1X. The most difficult part was getting the processor chip to line up. To anyone reading this: Just imagine a postage stamp sized chip with about 100 or so 1/8 inch long legs that have to line up perfectly, or else.
