FRIGHTFEST--THE TEN BEST HORROR FILMS OF ALL TIMEFeb 13 '06 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line I love horror films, and it was just about impossible to sum up the best ones with only ten. So I went with my favorites...sorry Dr. Lecter! 1. THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE/1974 This utterly horrifying film feels like a documentary, and at times, you actually can't even believe what you are seeing. Little to no gore, you'll walk away think- ing you saw a lot more. 2. THE EXORCIST/1973 Still shocking--the most deeply disturbing film ever made about The Devil. 3. HALLOWEEN/1978 Style over substance, for sure. But what style! Never before--and rarely since--have the deeper, darker corners of Panavision been used so effectively. And the boogeyman...he IS Michael Myers!!! 4. ROSEMARY'S BABY/1968 Intelligent cinema from one of the great directors, Roman Polanski. Tension mounts throughout, and we, along with Rosemary, wonder just what is going on with those creepy old neighbors. Are all of them really...witches? 5. THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT/1999 Love it or hate it! This shaky, handheld camcorder of a film really gets under your skin and stays there. And it also proves the point that less is better than more when it comes to suspense. And the blood and gore? There isn't any, folks. 6. THE SHINING/1980 This movie actually gets BETTER with each viewing. Scary haunted hotel complete with awful little girls, and Jack Nicholson in one of his best roles as an axe-wielding psychopath. 7. PSYCHO/1960 The granddaddy of all slasher flicks. Poor crazy Norman Bates lives all alone in that big creepy house on the hill. Or does he? 8. THE HAUNTING/1963 Shirley Jackson's novel of a terrifying house is chillingly and provocatively brought to the screen in this, one of the best haunted house movies ever made. 9. KING KONG/1933 Old and creaky and 73 years old, this is the original and best Gigantic Monster Movie ever made. And with such pathos, we care about Kong so much that we don't want to see him plunge to his death at the end. Now there's a well made horror film if you ask me! 10. CARRIE/1976 Poor pitiful frumpy Carrie. She's unpopular and her mother's a religious fanatic. She's got absolutely NO ONE on her side! Except...she's telekinetic...and you might not want to mess with her too much...or else she just might...kill you... |
