I agree with Stephen, and you might have found a space, down the line, for Jules Dassin's BRUTE FORCE.
Otherwise, a great list.

Some good choices, (Reply to this comment)

but the best prison movie is Robert Bresson's "A Condemned Man Escapes" (also billed as "A Man Escapes" and with a very long subtitle, too).

i'm glad I was able to jog your memory, Lorace. There is an older version of Count of Monte Cristo starring Robert Donat that is just as good as the one you like, if you ever have a chance to see it. :>

....
I never realized how much I like Prison pictures until I read your list. I am so eager to see the ones you mentioned that have escaped my perusal.
So glad you mentioned Count of Monte Cristo. It has always been near the top of my list and I've enjoyed it EVERY time I've watched it. (about 6 times...I think.) Guy Pierce is so marvelous to hate and Jim C. - easy to suffer with - and Richard Harris. Who can compete?
Anyway, thanks, I've so enjoyed thinking about these pix. Great quotes and summaries.

on your list that I've seen, I've really liked - clearly I need to add the few I haven't managed to catch! Stalag 17 in particular is one that is begging to be seen.
Nice list - thanks for the mention!

Hi Phil,
Yes, Kwai would certainly qualify as one of the best. I plumb forgot about it. Thanks for mentioning it! :>

...prison movies there are?
I would have to include the 1950s The Bridge on the River Kwai
Fine list here though there are a couple I'm not familiar with that I'll have to check out. They must be good considering the company they are in.
Thanks,
Phil

Murder In the First... (Reply to this comment)

I absolutely loved that film and thought Kevin Bacon was beyond superb in it. I just thought the timing was not all that great because of Shawshank Redemption getting so much press. I am glad that you mentioned it in your top ten though. It rightly deserves to be there. Great list!
