There are people out there who love Wal-Mart. I do not. It is a necessary evil in my life being basically the only store in town with the exception of the designer outlets all the people from Massachusetts like to shop at. Me, I end up at the store I love to hate. Wal-Mart isn’t a craft store, though. Oh it may have something it calls a craft section, but more often than not when I go in there I come away frustrated.
The nearest yarn and knitting stores are 45 minutes to an hour away. Even then, we are talking more boutique-like stores rather than something for the true craftsperson. As my interesting in knitting has grown these past six months and I needed supplies, I began turning to Joann.com more and more frequently.
I’ve been in the Joann brick and mortar store. The nearest one here is about a two hour drive on the other side of the state. Not exactly a quick trip to the discount store. The online store is basically representative of everything they have in the brick and mortar store.
The positives for me are the sheer number of items I can order. When I look at a project the requires a certain size knitting needle, I don’t have to worry about driving all over creation trying to find it. I simply log onto Joann.com and search for what I need. The search engine works really well and I can find exactly what I need.
My main use is knitting needles and notions. I have ordered a few skeins of yarn from Joann.com, but most of the yarn I have now has come off of Ebay. The yarn I have ordered from Joann.com has been accurate in color to what’s shown on my computer screen, which can be very important.
Not a knitter or crocheter? Well, Joann.com carries supplies for all sorts of crafts. There are scrapbooking supplies, sewing and quilting supplies including fabric, baking supplies, jewelry-making supplies, candle-making, wood crafts, t-shirts and much, much more. There’s something for just about every age and every craft available from this website. In addition, there are dedicated links from the main page to what’s on sale and what’s in the clearance section right now. This makes it fast and easy just to browse to the site to check out if there’s anything new at a great price.
For those looking for advice on their crafts, there are sections of the website that provide a community available to help you, although I’ve found other knitting sites that I like more. Joann.com does have a section with projects and patterns which is nice. This is another great resource I have for getting new ideas. If you‘re not confident enough in your own ability to figure out what you need for the project, all of the necessary supplies are displayed with the project along with links to add them to your cart.
If you are lucky enough to live close to a physical Joann store, you might not need to order from the website, but it can definitely be of use to you. The current store circular is available for display, so you can know what’s on sale before you venture out. There’s also a listing of classes taking place at the store, as well as a store locator for those (like me) needing help finding the closest store to their location.
I haven’t yet paid a shipping fee on an order from Joann.com. I can’t say that their standard shipping impresses me though. The last time I ordered it took nine days to get to me. The shipment was sent Fedex SmartPost which means Fedex delivers it to my local post office for pick-up. It actually took a number of days for the shipment to be readied to ship after I placed the order, so the problem wasn’t with Fedex or the post office. I wouldn’t expect to get anything in a hurry from the site.
Still, I have no complaints and will order from Joann.com again in the future when I need specific things I can’t find locally. Browsing online still isn’t the same as going into the store, although I usually come away with a lot more than what I went in to purchase. Online I can get those specific items that I want and be done with it. Sometimes, that just has to be good enough.
