I'm Not Crazy; You're the One that's Crazy! Institutionalized

The Bottom Line All I wanted was a Pepsi.

Although mental illness has even been the subject of comedy movies, this is about Psycho DRAMAS, so here is a list of ten serious movies about people who suffer severe illness, some true, some wholly fabricated by those crazy people in Hollywood.

Ten: Session Nine (2001 written and directed by Brad Anderson and starring David Caruso) This film gave me the chills. Filmed right in Danvers Massachusetts, the abandoned Danvers Mental Hospital is one scary looking building, and the setting for this building. An asbestos cleaning crew including CSI Miami's own David Caruso land a contract to clean the building up. Next thing you know, members of the crew are showing up dead! Can a mental hospital drive someone crazy? Watch this film to find out!

Nine: Mulholland Drive (2001 directed by David Lynch) Leave it to David Lynch to create such a strange warped movie about mental illness. Betty Elms has won a swing dance contest and now she has come to Hollywood to become a big star! In reality, her dreams crash, but in her dreams, reality is so much nicer. You'll need to watch this film more than once to separate the delusions from the truth. This is NOT a standard sort of movie, and shows things from the point of view of the characters who are suffering from delusions, although this may not be apparent on the first viewing. now I'm in this dream place! Well, you can imagine how I feel

Eight: Girl, Interrupted (1999 directed by James Mangold, based on the book by Susanna Kaysen on her own experience Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie) A young girl who compulsively shoplifts finds herself in a mental hospital in the 1960s (oh wait, it was the actress who compulsively shoplifts, her character here just didn't fit in) This is a film also based on a true life story, and it is compelling and sad. Have you ever confused a dream with life? Or stolen something when you have the cash? Have you ever been blue? Or thought your train moving while sitting still, Maybe I was just crazy. Maybe it was the 60's or maybe I was just a girl.... interrupted

Seven: Sling Blade (written, directed and starring Billy Bob Thorton) some people call it a sling blade uhhhh huh First, a 15 minute short film, then a full length movie, this film showcased then unknown actor Billy Bob Thorton as a mentally ill man, Karl Childers, who was serving prison for murdering his mother when he was a child. The short film Some People Call it a SlingBladeis an interview with him, the long film shows him integrating back into society. It also features performances by Dwight Yoakam and John Ritter

Six: Frailty (2001 Directed by Bill Paxton, starring Bill Paxton and Matthew McCaughney) I really enjoyed this creepy movie about a young man recounting his child hood. Apparently, one day dad decided that God had told him to go forth and hunt demons and gave him the special powers to do so. Was he the serial killer known as God's Hands or was it his brother Adam? This movie seriously gave me the creeps. Only demons should fear me.. and you're not a demon are you?.

Five: Awakenings (1990 directed by Penny Marshall, starring Robert De Niro and Robin Williams) If you picked this Robin Williams up hoping for an entertaining comedy, you will be woefully dissappointed. This was an excellent, but heartwrenching drama about Dr. Malcolm Sayer who tried a different drug to bring catatonic mental patients to a normal states. Robert De Niro stars as the patient, Leonard Lowe who is almost cured by the new drug. This is a true story, and if you can watch it with dry eyes, you are better than I.

Four: The Machinist (2004 directed by Brad Anderson starring Christain Bale) Trevor Resnik has something seriously wrong with him. He can't sleep, he is down to 98 pounds and he sees a co-worker at the factory that apparently no one else can see. Bale actually went down to a sickening weight for this role, and the movie was very disturbing. What is wrong with Resnik? a little guilt goes a long way.

Three: 12 Monkeys (1995 directed by Terry Gilliam, starring Bruce Willis, Brad Pitt) Cole (Willis) is in a mental institution. Why? He seems to think he is a time traveler from the future, sent here to observe. He is supposed to find the bio terrorist group, the 12 Monkeys. Also institutionalized is Jeffrey Goines (Pitt) who seems to really be crazy wiping out the human race? That's a great idea! That's Great! but more of a long term thing. I mean first we have to focus on more immediate goals!
Cole: Oh, wouldn't it be great if I 'was' crazy. then teh world would be okay

Two: Memento (2000 directed by Christopher Nolan, starring Guy Pearce, Carrie Anne-Moss, Joe Pantaloni) I have this condition Lenny may not be crazy, but he certainly is mentally ill. The man cannot remember what happened 10 minutes ago. What he does remember (does he?) is John G. murdered his wife. How can he forget, it's tatooed on his chest along with the other "facts". Is the cop "Teddy" helping him find John G? What about Natalie? If you have any doubt that this was a great film, read the hundred or so epinions on it. So you lie to yourself to be happy, we all do it

One: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975 directed by Milos Forman, starring Jack Nicholson) The all time classic film on mental institutions. If you've seen it once, Nicholson, the Chief and Nurse Ratched will be forever etched in your mind. One of Nicholsons classic performances as Randal McMurphy who feigns mental illness to avoid prison and ends up with a fate worse than prison. Look for a young John Ratzenberger (Cheers, voice of Mr. Potatoe Head Toy Story, Toy Story 2) as a patient. I must be crazy to be in a loony bin like this

Other films that I have enjoyed that border on insanity:
Donnie Darko, Jacob's Ladder, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
