Ten Great Heist Movies

The Bottom Line This is a list of my favorite Heist Movies.

Oh there are so many crime films, it was hard to just make one list. This list just focuses on a popular sub genre of the Crime Movie, the big job, that last score, the PERFECT HEIST. Well, some of these movies, the heists turned out to be a little less than perfect but the movies were fun to watch. My list is in chronological order:

1 The Killing - directed by Stanley Kubrick (1956) Five men plot to steal two million dollars, but one of 'em told his dame. Will she rat 'em all out, or want a cut of the action? One of Kubrick's first classics. This film is in black and white and the cinematography is top notch.

2. Dog Day Afternoon - directed by Sidney Lumet (1975 starring Al Pacino) If you like your heist films gritty and real, this is the true life story of a bank robbery that went awry. It also features top notch acting by Pacino. Director Sidney Lumet is no stranger to gritty thrillers, he also directed Pacino in the classic true life film Serpico.

3. Quick Change (1990 starring Bill Murray, Geena Davis and Randy Quaid) For comedy, this heist movie was very clever. For starters, this band of criminals had a very ingenius way of leaving the scene of the crime. After they 'escape' all they needed to do was get from the bank to the airport with all the money. If you like your heist films with a heaping helping of comedy, this film was quite funny.

4. Reservoir Dogs - Quentin Tarantino (1992 starring Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Chris Penn, Lawrence Teirney and Steve Buscemi) Sometimes Heists go wrong, and when they do, who to blame can be troublesome. You will never listen to Stuck in the Middle With You by Steeler's Wheel the same way again after seeing this movie. Why do I have to be Mr. Pink? Oh, and Quentin makes a brief cameo in his first film as well.

5. Bottle Rocket - directed by Wes Anderson (1996 starring Luke Wilson and Owen Wilson) How many knew Wes Anderson's first film was this quirky heist film with the brothers Wilson? Some criminals are organized, some, not so much. The protaganists of Bottle Rocket fall into the later category. If the "action" in Anderson's latest film The Life Aquatic was a little on the slow side for you, this first film show's Anderson's directing style before he mellowed out into quirky subtle humor.

6. Ronin directed by John Frankenheimer (1998 starring Robert De Niro, Jean Reno, Stellan Skarsgard, Sean Bean, Jonathan Pryce) Ronin is the Japanese word for samurai without masters. A team of specialists is hired to obtain a metal suitcase. How hard could that be for an expert team of specialists? Very hard if the Irish mafia and the Russians are trying to get the briefcase too. Lots of action and double crosses in this movie, plus an all star cast.

7. The Score (2001 directed by Frank Oz and starring Ed Norton, Robert DeNiro and Marlon Brando) DeNiro wants to pull off one last score, a rare item from the well guarded Montreal Customs House. Ed Norton is a young con artist. Brando even makes an appearance in this clever film. De Niro shows why he is such a well respected actor, and Norton shows why he is on his way up to DeNiro/Pacion status. Norton's character has to pretend he is mentally challenged to get a job at the custom house. His portryal was priceless. The film will keep you guessing who will outsmart who?

8. Ocean's Eleven - directed by Steven Soderbergh (2001 starring George Clooney, Andy Garcia, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts) Set against the backdrop of neon Las Vegas, this celebrity filled heist film was another that was just a lot of fun to watch. Clooney is Danny Ocean just out of prison and he has a plan to knock off the vault at the Bellagio. The film is tongue in cheek, has a lot of implausable or impossible scenes, but it is still a lot of fun. My favorite was Carl Reiner who must impersonate a wealthy European industrialist for his part in the heist. Matt Damon as a Las Vegas gaming commissioner was also a riot. I confess, I never saw the orignal, but I really enjoyed this remake.

9. The Hard Word (2002 starring Guy Pearce) How you say heist movie in Australian. This Australian heist movie is full of swearing, violence and kinetic action from start to finish. If you like Heist films or Guy Pearce, you owe it to yourself to find and see this film from down under.

10. The Italian Job (2003 remake with Ed Norton, Jason Statham, Seth Green, Mark Wahlberg, Mos Def and Charlize Theron) Usually, I am not fond of the remake. I watched the original movie with Michael Caine and Benny Hill, and thought I would fall asleep. This lively remake, which really shares nothing more than a trio of physics defying Mini Coopers on the other hand was an exciting and fun filled heist. Jason Statham as Handsome George?

Well, that's it, my list of my favorite heist films. If your favorite heist film isn't on the list, maybe I didn't see it. Leave it in the comment section! Check out my page for more top ten lists!
