I know Dell uses a modified version of Windows XP that only works with Dell Motherboards. I found this out when my mom-in-law's Dell PC had a motherboard crap out. I was going to scrap the system for parts and rebuild the machine, but I found out that Windows XP would not work with a new hardware setup that wasn't Dell.

I'm not sure if people may be trying to sell the Windows XP reinstall disks that came with a Dell PC, but if they are it will not work.

Well, that's cool then.

I doubt I could install a Windows product on every computer I own from the same CD, but then that is against the EULA, I suppose.

How MS actually does it is through a point system, it's really kind of odd. If you change certain components of your computer, it registers with a certain number of "points", so say one point for a hard drive or video card, or three or four points for a network card. On installation, if you rack up too many points MS figures you're a bad guy and shuts you down.

However, it's been my experience that MS's customer service is actually extremely helpfuland really only wants to catch the bad guys, so they'll generally leave single users like you and I alone.

I thought Microsoft had created a method whereby each copy of, say, XP could only be installed three times before it 'broke' (i.e., the key would fail). Is this not the case?

I've generally spent hours and hours dumping crap off each computer I buy, so I've never reinstalled (even though I have a legit OEM disk... sort of). You clearly do more of this. No issues?

Nicely done, and thanks for the entry. I currently own two separate Windows XP disks for many of the reasons you mention; I often wonder how many of the complaints you read about XP are actually problems caused by the 'customized' version of the software installed on a big box computer.
