I think the experience with Weaknees can be good if everything works like it should. The test for any business is how good are they when something goes wrong. Weaknees can ship out product quickly as anyone and the instructions are clear and they clearly have some expertise. Kudos to that. But in my case, I unfortunately had something go wrong and when push came to shove, Weaknees was indeed weak and Tivo stepped up the plate and stood behind the product. I received a Weaknees Tivo HD as a gift. A little over a year later, the Tivo started to freeze. I called Weaknees and they said most likely the hard drive. So I replaced the hard drive through Weaknees for $250. Easy enough to swap which I did. Unfortunately that wasn't the problem and Tivo was still freezing. Ok, I'm out $250, how much more money (and more importantly time) do I have to spend to get my Tivo back. I thought Weaknees was the niche player who knows more about the Tivo than Tivo, they'll definitely help. Through my roughly 2 mos of trying to get my Tivo back online, Weaknees was downright unpleasant to deal with and Tivo was absolutely pleasant and sympathetic that I was having problems. Ultimately, I had to replace my Tivo. Weaknees offered to do it as a "favor" with "special" pricing and got annoyed when I started asking a few questions about their "special" price - their response was "take it or leave it, you've wasted enough of our time already." hmmm... not very customer friendly. I indeed left it. I thought my days of using Tivo were over but I gave Tivo the company a last call, thinking low probability because my Tivo was from Weaknees. Talk about great customer service. The rep at Tivo had me try some more in depth trouble shooting (like rebuilding the linux kernel) and when that didn't work, offered me a new Tivo at a better deal than the "special" one I got from Weaknees. But more importantly, Tivo was friendly through all my conversations with them. Weaknees was always very curt and in the end downright rude. So, why does Weaknees exist? I don't think Weaknees is as "expert" in Tivo as people would have you believe. Maybe a few years ago, they were cutting edge. Especially now that Tivo has the HD XL model, modding doesn't require that much expertise. I guess we can thank Weaknees for pushing Tivo to come out with an XL model. Perhaps they know their days are numbered which is why they don't care. Whatever the reason, too bad.
