How to Break in a Baseball Glove

Feb 21 '06

The Bottom Line Break in glove in the oven. Don't let the glove dry out at any time. Don't leave in the oven with the heat still on.

An effective method to break in a particularly stiff, but well-made (and expensive) glove.

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

2. Moisten the glove generously with water using a sopping wet sponge...make sure to soak the ties, which are first to dry out.

3. Apply a glove conditioner (cream or foam) generously, rubbing it in to every nook and cranny of the glove and ties. The glove should be sopping in the conditioner.

4. Place a softball in the pocket and wrap the glove in aluminum foil...air tight.

5. Turn OFF the oven and then put the wrapped glove in the oven for five minutes.

6. Remove the wrapped glove and do not open. Let it steam. After it cools, open the foil and apply generous amounts of the glove conditioner, rubbing it into nooks and crannies and the ties.

7. Preheat the oven again to 400 degrees...turn the oven OFF, and then put the glove, with the soft ball in the pocket and wrapped air tight with foil, in the oven for five minutes.

8. Repeat steps #6 and #7 once more. Add one more coating of the conditioner on the cooled glove and then put a soft ball in the pocket of the glove whenever not in use. Continue to play catch, so the glove will mold to the player's hand.
