Acres and Acres of WineFeb 22 '06 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line This is a good, sweet wine for many different foods or occasions. In central Kentucky exists a small winery with a production of about 35,000 cases of wine annually. This winery produces some good- tasting wines offered for sale in the local Richmond, Kentucky area and the nearby vicinity. The company is known as Acres of Land Winery and one of its products is Acres of Land Vignoles, a wine produced in 2003. Basic Characteristics of This Wine: This wine is light yellowish in color with a soft nose that is fruity, floral, and sweet. The acidity of this wine is low and it has almost no bitterness. Fruit is the name of the game with this wine. There is a combination of fruit flavors like melon, white grapes, a small amount of grapefruit and orange, pineapple, and some berry notes. The body of this wine is medium and the taste is sweet. The alcohol level of this wine is 11.9 percent by volume. It retails in Kentucky stores for about $11.50 per bottle and it is kept fresh by the use of a rubber cork. Food Compatibility: This wine is the type that could be consumed with just about anything, but the first things that come to mind are salads, fruit pies, raw fruit, cheese, and other light foods. It makes a good choice to drink along with small snacks as an appetizer, leading up to the main course. Final Thoughts: Acres of Land is a winery I had never heard about until recently when I was driving down Interstate 75 through the state of Kentucky. I have traveled this route hundreds of times in the past but I was oblivious to the fact that a winery existed in Richmond- about 30 miles south of Lexington. The reason I never knew about this winery is because of the lack of advertising. This changed quickly when the owner of Acres of Land decided to place two brown- colored signs on I-75 (one on the north- bound side and one on the south bound side), notifying motorists of this winery. As soon as I saw the signs, I decided it was a place worth visiting. I pulled off the interstate and headed west. I reached the winery only a few minutes later. This winery is so named because it covers eight acres of land. This is nothing impressive, but I assume the owner liked the name and loves his land so he decided on this as the name of his business. The small winery produces about ten different types of wine and Vignoles is one of several sweet wines among the offerings. I sampled all of the wines present and this one ranked in my top five. It was good enough that I purchased a full bottle when I left the tasting area. I normally dont drink much wine but I liked the products at Acres of Land and I selected two of the products to take back to my house for further analysis. What I like about this wine is its versatility and its sweet, non- bitter nature. With wines, I tend to go for the sweeter varieties. I cant really explain why because when it comes to liquor and most beer, I prefer my beverage to be dry. With a winery like Acres of Land, I was content with most of what I sampled because the majority of the wines tend toward the sweet side. Vignoles is sweet to the point where it is very easy- drinking, leaving only a slight amount of bitterness in the finish that washes away quickly. I didnt try this, but it seems like a wine that would be good mixed with sparkling water. The sweet profile and the bubbly contributions from the sparkling water would make for a good, refreshing drink. Acres of Land isnt well- known yet so it has had little exposure to the majority of the public and it has had few opportunities to compete in wine tasting events. However, it does have at least one award that I know about: A Silver Medal at the 2005 Florida State Fair International Wine Competition. This isnt anything spectacular, but it is at least a good start and it could be a sign of great things to come for this business. Acres of Lands wine products are detailed in the web site, acresoflandwinery.com. You can also call the winery directly at 859-328-3000. It will take some time before this winery is well- known and achieves greater name recognition. Right now, its products are sold only in Kentucky so the vast majority of the U.S. population has no way to purchase this companys wine. Overall, Acres of Land 2003 Vignoles is a very pleasant wine that I recommend sampling if you get the chance. I rate this wine 4 stars out of 5. It isnt great enough to be a classic and the sweet taste wont appeal to everyone. But it is still good choice of wines for a pre- dinner snack or as an accompaniment to a fruity dessert. |
