On an Island - Albums I Can't Live Without

The Bottom Line and those are MY deserted island discs

In celebration of David Gilmour's Latest Release On an Island here is my list of top ten albums if I was on a deserted island with nothing but electricity, my Yamaha Reciever, a CD player, my Rotel amplifier, my Polk Audio speakers and my Velodyne subwoofer. Actually, I'd also like a refrigerator stocked with fresh water, and a freezer full of food too.

Here they are, in order by favorite (well my favorites at the moment in time that I wrote this list anyway, I guess I was mostly waxing nostalgic in this moment):

Ten: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magic I love the Red Hot Chili Peppers, they are just a cool sounding band, and for me, this album was their pinacle.

Nine: Metallica -.. and Justice for All I'm sure I'll be in the mood for heavy metal on the island, so I may as well bring my favorite album by my favorite heavy metal band.

Eight: Diana Krall Live in Paris One of the sweetest sounding voices in jazz, this is a great album with many good songs. It would evoke memories of the time I saw her live in Boston.

Seven: Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense Who can pick their favorite Talking Heads album? Not me, so I'd take this concert disc which is a treasure of their greatest hits.

Six: Jethro Tull Aqualung Jethro Tull? Why them? Hey, its my list, and since my teen years, I always enjoyed the music of Ian Anderson and his band named after the 18th century inventor of the seed plow. Plus I can't resist the opening chords and lyrics sitting on a park bench.

Five: Cheap Trick - Dream Police Another album that just brings me back, Cheap Trick was the band of the late 70s and early 80s power pop. Dream Police was practically a requirement of high school back when I went. Don't believe me? Watch Demone from Fast Times at Ridgmont High sing from Dream Police they're wide awake, they never sleep oh let me alone

Four: Steely Dan - Can't Buy a Thrill Fagen and Becker always provided perfection in their richly textured albums, and Can't Buy a Thrill was always my favorite. so you find yourself in Vegas, with a handle in your hand, you go back jack and you do it again

Three: Led Zeppelin IV Rock's greatest album by rock's greatest dinosaurs, Led Zeppelin. This is the album that Stairway to Heaven is from, an FM staple since it came out, but don't forget that there are a lot of other great songs on the album including Black Dog, Misty Mountain Hop and Going to California.

The best album from the best band in the world is my second favorite:

Two: Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon It was on Billboard Magazines Top Two Hundred for ELEVEN YEARS! Most albums if they make it fade out after a couple weeks, or at most a few months. Waters and Gilmours masterwork from 1973 remains a must have album in anyone's album collection. It was also one of the first to peak interest in SACD and Surround Sound formats.

My favorite piece of music in the world?

One: Beethoven, Ludwig van - The Ninth Symphony My favorite composer, my favorite symphony and my favorite piece of music in the entire space time continium.

Actually the list of albums I can't live without is at least 100, for this top ten, except the top 3, the other 7 can change day by day. I mean no Bowie, Neil Young, The Cure, Sting or so many others? Just ten albums seems so cruel. I could give a list of top ten albums I love for each letter of the alphabet. How about instead of ten albums you just let me bring a 120 gigabyte laptop computer with my 1500 plus album collection on MP3? Just give me the proper soundblaster card to plug it in via digital optical to the surround sound system.

Are these the best albums ever? Probably not, are these 10 of my favorite albums? Yes they are. If you get stranded with me, bring your ten favorite discs. Oh and some more food!
