Neopets Islandberry Crunch Cereal: A Berry Good Breakfast Choice For Any Neopet Addict

Mar 01 '06

The Bottom Line Join in the annual Gadgadsbogen festival, find the pink Meepit and munch away on some Islandberry Crunch Cereal. Your Neopet adventure starts as soon as you open the box ...

I was really excited when my grocery store got the new Neopet Islandberry Crunch cereal in stock. There was a lot of hype about it at the Neopets website, featured games and NP [Neopoint] making opportunities before it was released so we were all anxious to get a few boxes and try it out. General Mills is the parent company that manufacturers the cereal so you know that it’s from a reputable company with more than a few well known breakfast products on the market. Being on a low carb diet almost all the time I had to break the rules and cheat a little to try this out and it was more than worth it. Not only does it have a very berry flavor to it, the boxes come with a Neopet Trading Card, games on the back and some very interesting facts. We went through the first box in a matter of days and I was sure to stock up on them while they were still on sale. I doubt this will replace my all time favorite cereal [Cracklin’ Oat Bran] but as far as the brood is concerned, this has unseated Cocoa Pebbles, Rice Krispies and the Batman cereal.

General Mills Neopet Islandberry Crunch Cereal

You can find this at most major grocery stores in a 11.5 ounce box. To me the cover art is way too busy and makes it hard to spot it on the shelf. If they would have made the Neopet logo bigger, this would have avoided the somewhat cluttered look. The boxfront also features the newest marketing gimmick from General Mills; these are small but clearly visible tags at the top that tell parents [or those purchasing cereals] that it is indeed a good source of fiber and calcium and only has 120 calories per serving. The back of the box has games, trivia facts and a nice welcome to Mystery Island. You are asked to try and find all the Islandberry clusters hidden in the picture, work your way through a maze and unscramble letters but don’t worry, all the answers appear on the bottom of the box.

Included inside the box is an official Neopet Trading Card; these can be used with the card game or just as a collectible. The ones that we have gotten so far have all had a gold star with the word ‘promo’ stamped on it. These are not cards that features Rare Item codes so please, do not believe what people at online auctions are saying about them. If you bid on one of these cards under the assumption that you are going to get something that you can redeem at the Virtual Pets / Space Station, you will be disappointed. The card is packaged separate from the cereal and isn’t glued inside the box so make sure that you are buying boxes that haven’t been tampered with. Some people have been opening boxes and them gluing them shut just to get the card.

The overall taste of the cereal is very berry. There are two varieties; the purple ones taste like a grape and berry mix and the red ones seem like they lack any flavor at all. That’s just my taste buds, you might pick up on a flavor when you eat it. It does turn the milk a rather gruesome color if you let it sit for more than about five minutes but it does give it a nice berry flavor when you drink it down. The size of the berries is pretty small, about the size of a pea. As far as the nutritional side of it goes, it stacks up like almost every other breakfast cereal. Each one cup serving has 120 calories, 27 grams of carbohydrates [9 from sugar], 1 gram of protein and 190 milligrams of sodium. This is without the milk, you will have to factor in that amount per serving. They do provide you with the nutritional values of the cereal plus one half cup of skim milk but not everyone drinks skim.

Things To Know

• The packages contain a ten cent Boxtops For Education ticket that can be used to purchase school supplies. Clip this out and send it to school with your child if your school participates. If your school doesn’t ask them to look into it. All those tickets do add up and some school are using them to buy computer equipment, books, art supplies and internet access.

• This also comes with a clip out coupon worth fifteen points towards purchases at the Betty Crocker website. This allows you to redeem the points for savings of 25 - 75 % off of things that they sell.

• If you are not happy with this product, General Mills wants to know about it. They will refund your purchase price or make an adjustment of equal value if this doesn’t meet or exceed your expectations. You can contact them 24 hours a day via email at www.generalmills.com or by calling their toll free number at [800] 328-1144.

The Bottom Line

If you are a Neopet addict or know someone that is, this is something that you’ll want to pick up - even for just the novelty of having the box and getting the promo trading card. The cereal itself is a little on the boring side; there’s no marshmallows or dubloons to be found. Kids might get into the taste of it if they like berry flavored cereals like the new Berry Lucky Charms [also from General Mills and released at almost the same time as Islandberry Crunch]. The boxes sell for about $3.50 a piece but I got them when they were on sale for $2.00 and used a .50 cent off coupon so my end price was a dollar a box [my store doubles the coupon value up to .99 cents]. For a buck a box you can’t go wrong with this cereal, especially if you are a Neopet lover or are into berry flavored cereals.

As always, thanks for the read!
