A good review for anyone new to the tool wars! As a fellow tool hound, I have to ask- Do you read tools of the trade? It's a free magazine to tradespeople(with a great website) That does a tool test each issue as well as previews new tools!

Great Article! (Reply to this comment)

What a great article! This should be extremely helpful to those getting started, and even to those who've not paid attention to the tool evolution and mergers in recent years.
While some brand loyalists may view their beloved product a little differently, I thought you did a great job classifying the different levels. Brand loyalty is always a fun and provocative subject on the boards!
I'll add a second plug for Milwaukee as being a top professional line of rugged portable power tools. I'll also add General and General International to the machinery lines. Same company, two lines...the General is made in Canada and is very comparable to the top Powermatic machines. General International is an importer like Jet and Grizzly....some nice equipment for serious hobbyists and light commercial use. Craftsman offers so many different products that I think they almost have to be broken into 2-3 groupings because they have offerings at almost all levels...from GMC caliber occasional use items, to the Ryobi made clones, to the newer machinery offerings that are made by Orion and Rikon that compete with Delta, Jet, and GI...some of which are excellent IMO.
And finally, I'd urge anyone to evaluate every purchase on it's own merits, and not allow the brand to rest on it's laurels because things are changing faster than ever in the tool world, and there are lemons, sleepers, and winners within nearly every name.
Super job on this review! I loved it.

Thanks for adding some brands I have less experience with.
I do hear the Panasonic cordless drills are okay, but no experience.
I just forgot Makita. I have their 10" sliding compound miter saw and their palm sander, both good tools.

You forgot brands like Milwaukee (great stuff - some of the best cordless tools and inventor of the reciprocating saw), Makita (decent) and Panasonic (cough GARBAGE cough).

guard your tools! (Reply to this comment)

we've had a series of robberies in our neighborhood focused on snatching contracter's power tools. Our neighbor was having crown molding put in and someone drowve up and snatched the saw in broad daylight!
