Chelledun's Picks for the 10 Best Movies of 2005!

Mar 04 '06 (Updated Jun 26 '06)

The Bottom Line Here they are, the ten best of the year! Check them out and see if you agree.

I have seen a whoooole lot of movies this year. The following are my picks for the top ten movies of 2005. I didn’t go solely off of my original star ratings for the films because some I have seen again. I’ve also taken into account factors such as repeat viewability and the overall significance of these films. Feel free to agree/disagree in the comments!

10. King Kong - I liked this movie well enough, but probably won’t be watching it again. There are some very memorable moments here, but the bloated three hour length keeps me from ranking this film higher. That said, I love Andy Serkis and the animation of Kong makes this definitely worth watching once. I really enjoyed the views of 1930’s New York City as well.

9. Fun with Dick and Jane - This Jim Carrey and Tea Leoni film is surprisingly hilarious. While it probably won’t become a classic, the movie made my family and I laugh from beginning to end and has some truly clever comedy moments. Carrey and Leoni balance each other out well.

8. The Prize-Winner of Defiance, Ohio - This little-recognized film is one of the very best of the year. Julienne Moore shines as a mother who helps support her family by winning jingle-writing competitions. Moore plays Evelyn as a wonderful person, but never a victim. The story is unique and based on a true story. The ending provides a look at the family today.

7. Crash - This is just a high quality, thought provoking film. Crash deals with themes of racism in a very dramatic and poignant way. Although some parts were painful to watch, I loved this film because it really made me think. Although all the actors did a wonderful job, I thought Matt Dillon did particularly well as Officer Ryan.

6. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - “Difficult Times Lie Ahead, Harry” in this fourth film of the Harry Potter series. I like the darker feel of this movie and the fact that it has some genuinely scary moments. The child actors (Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson) do a nice job in this film, which is now my second favorite in the Harry Potter series only after the first. Although there are a few plot holes, the filmmakers generally do a good job in cramming a pretty thick book into a film of a reasonable length.

5. Flightplan - This thriller starring Jodi Foster kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. I loved the claustrophobia and paranoia of the airplane setting. This film received five stars from me when I viewed it, and it would be higher on the list if it were not for the fact that I don’t think the repeat viewing value is very high now that I know all the plot twists.

4. Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith - Not everyone loved this movie, but I did. It was my first Star Wars film ever and it still sucked me in and kept my attention. I thought Revenge of the Sith offered the finest visuals of any film this year and Yoda’s action scenes made the whole movie for me. Hayden Christensen’s film is far superior here to Episode 2, which is fortunate.

3. The 40-Year-Old Virgin - I got this from hubby for Christmas and we laughed almost as hard on the second viewing as the first time we saw it in the theater. This movie is raunchy, irreverent, and freaking hilarious. Steve Carrel is just super likable in his role as the title character, despite all his friends sexist antics.

2. Rent - Rent wins the prize for the movie that I can’t get out of my head after seeing it. I’ve purchased the soundtrack and listened to it nonstop, and can’t wait to see the film on video. What the filmmakers here really did right was choosing to bring the majority of Rent the play’s original broadway cast into the same roles in the film. I love, love, love the voices in this cast, particularly those of Jesse Martin and Rosario Dawson (who was not one of the original broadway cast, but is amazing).

1. Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe - This film really brings the popular story by C.S. Lewis to life. I like so many things about this film, from the beautiful scenery to the imaginative characters. Therefore, Chronicles gets five stars and the very high honor of best film of 2005 from me!

That's it! On the whole, not a bad year for movies as far as I'm concerned.
