Re: question - war movie/soccer game (Reply to this comment)
by sticksnpicks
I googled that and it might might have been, "Escape to Victory," a 1981 Sylvester Stallone movie in which he plays a prisoner of war involved in a Nazi propaganda soccer game.

Hi Joe.
I have this documentary as well. VHS; got it about 6-7 years ago.
Yeah, it's fantastic. Anybody who wants to know what really went on over there, who will not read books, can learn from watching this entire set.
Great job with the review.
Incidentally, I checked out your Top 10 Vietnam movies. Right on with We Were Soliders, but Apocolypse Now is hands-down the best Vietnam film ever, and I argue the best film for depicting the madness of any war.
Brad.

Go Tell the Spartans (Reply to this comment)
by Stephen_Murray, in Movies
Having finally seen it, I agree with George Chabot that it is the best. None of the extravagances of "Deer Hunter," "Apocalypse Now," or other movies, but a wide range of characters, including a Curtis LeMay-like general (Army not Air Force) and one of MacNamara's analysts.

Re: Re: Vets were spat upon? (Reply to this comment)
by st_patrick
Hey Joe,
With regards to Berkley and Oakland, I would contest your claim that they were not soldier friendly. Ever heard of Vietnam Veterans Against War? Many vets were active in the anti-war movement. Given that many protesters had friends and family in 'Nam, I highly doubt they would call them baby killers. Furthermore, I doubt that a spaced out flower child would risk spitting on a heavily armed veteran.
With regards to your family, obviously I wasn't there. However, I'd like to point out that it's common for soldiers returning from lost wars to feel unappreciated and betrayed. Remember Germany after World War One? Remember the "November criminals/stabbed in the back" myth? There are some uncanny parallels between that myth and the story of the spat upon veteran. Sometimes people "remember" wrong.
Do I think vets were given decent treatment? Absolutely. Vets were usually heralded as patriots who fought for a noble cause by both citizens and the press. It's true though that many disabled vets got lousy treatment from the government that claimed to support them. Not unlike today.
Regards,
Patrick

Hello AJ,
Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. I have heard of the film but I have not seen this one either. By posting my list of films I like about the Vietnam war I have found about five more to watch. Thanks and have a great day.

One of the best Vietnam movies... (Reply to this comment)
by AinsleyJo
...wasn't even a Vietnam movie: {b}Mr. Holland's Opus{/b} where you met this eager--though no rocket scientist--young high school boy who finally found his niche in high school beyond the football team.
You see him in the parade later with his family there watching him and his dad whooping, "That's my boy!!! That's my boy!!!" as the young man marches past grinning from ear-to-ear.
Later in the show, you find out that he ends up dying in Vietnam.
They showed his tombstone quickly, but it looks as if this guy had managed to move up in the ranks there, as well.
They had a full military ceremony, and the flag was handed to his family, and you saw how subdued and sad they all looked and remember how joyful they'd looked just a few years earlier when they were watching him in the parade.
You saw Vietnam portrayed earlier, too, when the class of 1965 graduated while a voiceover of one of President Johnson's heavy-heart speeches played in the background. Fresh-faced young men were going up on the stage and receiving their diplomas--and many of them would be going off to war with some of them not returning.
While I still wonder "One-two-three..." what they were fighting for, I find it disgusting that our Vietnam veterans were treated so shabbily by both the powers-that-be and private citizens.
Not a single one should have been called a baby-killer or been spat at.
If any name-calling had been necessary at all, it should have gone towards the people in power who sent our young men there!
Peace!
AJ :-)

Sorry about the H here, but many of these are all plot, with little or no mention of why they made your top 10 list. If you want me to come back and re-read at some point, drop me an email -

Howdy Patrick,
Thanks for your read, rate and opinion. I don't know what the internet has posted but I do know for a fact that returning combat veterans to Oakland California were spat upon. The Bay Area, Berkley, Oakland were not soldiers friendly. I went through the Oakland Meps way after the Vietnam war and was called a Baby killer. I told the lady I was not in Vietnam and left. My family are mostly Marines who served in Nam and they would differ with you. Would you say the Vets were given decent treatment by the nation, government and press? However you feel, I respect your opinion.

Vets were spat upon? (Reply to this comment)
by st_patrick
I enjoyed your Vietnam film list, but was dismayed you repeated that oft-told myth, namely that returning veterans were spat upon. These stories seem to have originated not from actual events, but from Vietnam apologists, and then only after the war was well over.
If you do a google search about the Vietnam era and you will find plenty of stories about anti-Vietnam protesters being beaten, jeered at, and arrested, but you won't find any stories about veterans being spat on.
Best of wishes to you.

I will also recommend Go Tell The Spartans, and hope to see the other two. Thanks for sharing!

84CharlieMoPic is a low budget movie of a long range reconnaissance team lost in the jungles of Vietman with a cameraman who is assigned to film the unit in action. This is a movie which will have an impact on your perception of what can happen in the bush.
This is a hard to find movie but well worth the effort. I saw it once seventeen years ago and still remember it well.

"Who'll stop the rain?" starts in Vietnam and then shows some vets running amok in the desert (not Iraq...).
I have "Go tell the Spartans" near the top of my queue, on recommendation of George_Chabot.
