I thought about these short things, and yeah many people haven't seen them but some have and it gives these filmmakers a lot of exposure that they wouldn't get at the technical night.

I just wish the academy could work with the distributors and producers of these things to make them more widly available. A special DVD that film nuts could buy, released yearly, with the nominated and winning shows.

My predictions were perfect (Reply to this comment)
by Stephen_Murray, Stephen_Murray is an Advisor on Epinions in Movies
(in commenting on Macresarf1's): 2 for 2.

Since basically no one has seen the short subjects, I think they should be moved to the technical awards night (along with sound editing—if that isn't technical, what is?)

(My earllier confusion was prompted by not being on one of my own computers.)

And I was flabbergasted by "Crash" winning best picture. In retrospect, I think that it will look to be as bad a choice as other upsets: "The Greatest Show on Earth" and "An American in Paris," neither of which I consider good movies and made in years when there were great ones...

Yeah I thought about allowing a category to be wrong if you didn't pick anything in it. If we're all around next year maybe we can have it so you can pick all categories except short subject because NO ONE ever gets around to seeing short subjects, they are so hard to find... so, with the exception of BAMBO-BAMBO, everyone I think tried out for most of them, even the short subjects... so to be nice I fell back on my Roberts Rules, where no vote / prediction simply counts as an abstention.

I don't think it would've wildly changed the results though, might have made it worse for everyone.

It was kinda fun tallying it up, I hope more people next year will take their chances and pick something. Maybe Epinions could have it as a contest? The person(s) who can get the most right wins credits to buy something from shopping.com?

Cheers,

- Steve

BRAVO! (Reply to this comment)

Dear Steve: I thoroughly enjoyed the precision, style and good humor of your analysis.

All hail to briankrakow!

I did better than I thought I would because guessing another person's judgment, far less a group I really have no clue about, is not my game.

This year's nominated films and performances were amazingly good, and I have no quarrel with the winners, except for CRASH as Best Picture. But even there, a certain logic applied. The film, absurdly coincidental as it was, had a didactic inclusiveness perhaps greater than that of BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. I believe, in years to come, CAPOTE will be seen as the better picture, in terms of pure drama, than either of the others.

But that's according to my standards, not the Academy's

And that's why, year after year, I punish myself, playing a mug's game with myself.

Congratulations to the medal winners.

Meanwhile, though I have not double-checked, I think we have to find a cellar restaurant in Sausalito (a difficult task), where BAMBO-BAMBO can buy me lunch. I'll spring for the other guy out of the running, Chris Jarmick, who bested me by a few points.

We'll call it "The First Annual Epinions Oscar Losers Luncheon."

Just wait until next year . . . .

In the interim, I nominate you, Steve, to be our OFFICIAL EPINIONS STATISTICIAN!

Regards.

I don't really deserve to win, as I skipped out on several categories, including Makeup (where I was making a joke, but I probably would have incorrectly guessed anyways). If I was thinking in contest terms, I would have picked everything, but I doubt I would have got the others right anyways, so firstcontact probably deserves the win.

Cool idea to do this !!! (Reply to this comment)
by ChrisJarmick
Usually I get the short films stuff 75 percent correct on wild guesses and this year I didn't get any of them right !!!!

My original picks were made in early February and changed on the first of March, but I didn't change 'em on my epinions until the actual correct category appeared.

I have a complaint. If you didn't pick in a category you get it wrong. I took wild guesses in several categories as you would have to do if you were involved in office pools etc.

Even I didn't see all of the nominations.

(This is SERIOUS fun !!!).

Great fun reading though this.. and enjoyed how you tried to turn it into a horse race.

Well done...

did I mention the thing that if you didn't guess on a category... YOU GET IT WRONG?

(Still wouldn't have done as well as some. Congrats... wait'll next year...)

I didn't post my set of picks here in Epinions and it's a good thing because I was correct at a dismal rate of roughly 55%. There were several surprises this year and for anyone to correctly pick 70 percent or more of the winners is commendable.

That was funny as hell...

I'm just glad I refrained from predicting due not having seen all the nominated movies.
