| mastercha's Full Review: Keyspan Digital Media Remote |
After buying a new computer, a dvd-rom, a tv card and decent speakers, the only thing that my computer/entertainment system lacked was a remote. It was bugging the hell out of me that I had to get up from my bed and use the mouse or keyboard to pause a movie or change a channel or turn the volume up or down. I looked for remotes for my computer but all I found were outdated used remotes from old Packard Bell computers or expensive presentation remotes that were not worth their weight in gold. Finally I found the keyspan digital remote and I couldn't be happier! This compact, easy to use remote has a good range. I can use it from anywhere in my dorm, which is about 25 feet long (and I am sure you can use it farther than that). I love that the reciever connects via USB and not serial so I can connect it throug my USB hub on my desk so the reciever is right there in plain view and not obstructed under my desk where my computer is.
However, there are some drawbacks. First, the price. It is 40 dollars and that is a bit on the expensive side. Universal remotes for televisions cost a fraction of that price. But I figured it was worth it because my tv card is only a fraction of what a tv set costs, as is the dvd-rom, and I am also buying a reciever for the remote which can only add to the price. All in all, my entertainment system (tv, dvd, remote, speakers, etc) costs a fraction of what it would cost if I bought for example a Sony tv with a Panasonic dvd player, speakers, and a universal remote, so in the end it is worth it. Plus, I have everything on my computer which is great because dorm life can get cramped. Another drawback, and this one really irks me, is the software. First of all, it is still not Windows XP compatible and its sort of confusing. I'm not a big computer person and trying to configure my programs can be a real hassle. I eventually got that hang of it, but not before I was ready to throw my monitor out of the window in a fit of rage :-). My last complaint is the length of the USB cable they provide. It is very short! If you don't have a USB hub like I do sitting on your desk, they short cable can become a real hassle. But it uses a standard A to B cable so you can just buy a longer cable, but then that adds to the price :-(.
All in all this is a great product. I absolutely love it and I use it everyday. Although beign expensive, it is worth every penny. Thank god there are companies that cater to the lazy people like me!
